Brabanter Chickens

I would guess Ideal. But they have worked with them, I think.

Doc, if you don't want to deal with hatching, chicks from Ideal make sense. I am hoping to hatch a bunch out this spring and perhaps mail some to folks, if I can get both of mine laying.

Let us know what you find out, Vicky.

It's not so much hatching itself.....I've got a Sportsman full of my own eggs right now. It's more the combination of paying for shipped eggs, then MAYBE half of them hatch because they were knocked around by the USPS, then you still don't know what ratio of roos and hens you're gonna end up with....just too many unknowns for me, for right now, and since everyone got their birds from Ideal in the first place there didn't seem enough benefit in going the egg route. I'm starting with 5 cockerels and 15 pullets, I know what I'm getting, and I know I'll have several of each sex to choose from as they mature.

We'll see how things work out!

Well it makes sense to me to go with lives vs. hatching eggs but when I did an online search I could only find Hand Poultry that sell eggs.

I may get some from both sources now that I know about Ideal. Even if the birds are all from the same source that doesn't mean they will all be identical.
We may find that there are different types within the same breed and color.
I emailed HP a link to this thread and hope to get some info from them.

Yeah, I think that's a good plan. And as it happens, there's a lady in CA with a few brabanters from H and H who *might* be driving this way and *might* bring them to me, but that is not at all set in stone yet.

We just got two last night and I am in LOVE! The one with the smaller crest is so sweet. I held her on the way home and today I was feeding them and she came over to me and cuddled and I picked her up and pet her and she laid her head on me and went to sleep!

The guy that I got them from, had ordered them from Ideal, he ordered too many and was selling some.

I got my start with Brabanters from a private breeder who claimed theirs came from an "outside source". Other than having more of a poof than flat top backward mohawk they are the best I've seen. I have a couple from H&H. I would love to see this breed get a standard and be recognized in the USA.
