Braggs Mountain Buffs

Really like the sound of these chickens, egg size and bird size! Thank you for the photos! Thanks for taking time to answer my questions!:)

Several of the pictures won't load, maybe they are too big. I am hoping that next years birds look a lot better than this bunch. At any rate we really like the eggs we are getting!

Go into your default file and upload your photos there...then copy and paste them into the thread. That should work.

Thank you for uploading images of the flock...very nice.

Sorry, nearly computer illiterate, what/where is the default file? I think the next generation of these birds is going to look a lot nicer but we'll wait to see. Have a few growing now but will hatch more come spring. If all I get is BIG eggs that's good by me.

Hi all,

I ordered 100 of these birds back in February. Talked to the gentleman and heard all the problems he was having too, was very upset he cashed the check and told me he won't have any chicks available this summer! He then said he would be able to send them in early Nov, so I'm staying patient and hoping it's not a scam.

hello qball53,

good for you for rescuing the poor souls and breeding them on for a new generation.
the pictures are excellent - it's the first time i have ever seen a chicken that looked
ruffled - though they look visibly healthy. kinda sad that the race is in that state overall.
it's the first time i have seen them in the real world - thank you for the photos.

i am REALLY curious about what is going on with the braggs people over all. how do
they pay for all of those adds i have seen in magazines for many years - wow.
from all i have read on forums they seem like they are in a nearly defunct state.
that would be sad. imagine the amount of work they have put into the breed
to loose it at the end stage. i hope someone comes onto this thread and corrects me
if this is incorrect. would be great if it was.
maybe they could contract out the production of chicks.

i hope you'll consider keeping them going.

what i wondered, since your first birds are obviously mature, about what is the
final weight of the 'monsters' is 8lb 12oz the expected weight for the males?
how bout the hens?
in terms of 'girth'/meatiness would you consider it an acceptable dual purpose breed?
what, if anything, so far, could be improved.

what's their general personality/attitude, friendly, standoffish, aggressive...?

do they forage well at all ?

thank you for all of your input (!) i am never in a hurry for anything.

oh, please don't out-cross with a buff orpington unless you find an exceptional strain.
orpington is not what they are based on.
rir with buff rock is listed as the base in the 'recipe' - website below.
and a production red/rir/nh/red star with established egg size would recharge them if needed.
with a superior lay rate, since that is what it's all about.

i don't think this has been posted on this thread yet.

Hello Free Burd,

I think the final weight is going to be bit more as the rooster we weighed was a bit boney. These birds have huge feet and heavy legs so I don't know what the meat/bone ratio is going to be like. They are definately dual purpose birds, they seem to be comparable to our Birchen Marans.

I have inserted a picture of one of the eggs we collected last night. Didn't weigh it but Diana was impressed enough to take this picture. The other egg is a large egg. They are not all this big but they are all larger than anything else we have laying.

The birds are not flighty or agressive at all but don't seek attention.

I don't know about their foraging ability as they are in a run that is bare ground. We do have predator issues here and don't want to risk any at this time. They get alfalfa pellets along with their lay pellets and I typically pick some grass/weeds and toss them in their run, which they consume. The place we picked them up from was very arid and all I saw in their enclouser was some prickly pear catus and a mesquite bush. I understand that the gentleman fed them once a day by tossing their feed over the fence. So, these birds were raised on very little. Although they do seem to consume their fair share of food since we picked them up, LOL.
