Brahma Hen

POL would be nice. Can you separate your coop with chicken wire, so the new girls can stay on one side? This way the "old" chickens can see them and get used to them but not beat them up.
Yes, we have several runs attached together so we can easily separate them. Thanks for your advice!
Also, if I did this, could you, at some point, add all of the girls into the 1 coop? Thanks again!

I'm a big fan of buying chicks. My flock is small, so I raise them up to be very friendly with people. Sometimes if you get a POL aged hen, they might be very shy. But that's just me.

Ok. Do you buy eggs or chicks? Thanks, and sorry, I'm a bit of a beginner!!! :)

No need to be sorry! I buy chicks from a hatchery, and I also buy eggs. It just depends on my mood. When I do buy chicks, I'm fortunate enough to live about an hour's drive away from the Meyer Hatchery in Polk Ohio. I've purchased both Brahmas and Cochins from them and they've turned out darling! But not silkies.....no, they have ugly silkies. (I hate to say that.)

I should be more specific. I buy eggs from specific breeders if I want show quality birds, but for my egg production, I usually buy from the hatchery.

Ok, thanks for your help! When your eggs hatch, do you keep the cockerels?
Is not, do you sell them?
What shows are good for beginners and is there a section for Brahmas or Cochins to take part in?
(Sorry - so many questions!!! :)

Questions are great! A great show to go to is the Ohio National Poultry Show in Columbus Ohio. It's usually held the second week in November, so it's coming up. I think you can google "poultry shows" in your area and find some. Poultry shows can have so many breeds of chickens, it's mindboggling! And of course they often have turkeys, ducks, quail, pheasants, peacocks....I think you'd love it! Also, some of your local fairs might have poultry judging. There are also breeding clubs in almost every state. There are national clubs too. It's nice to go to some of these shows first, to see if it's something that you like. :) Really, I just google search different breeds and you can always find something. If you don't mind saying, what state are you in?

Oh, and I usually re-home my roosters. I do that on Craigslist. They go very quickly, because I give them away for free. It's really difficult to find a home for roosters because a lot of people don't even keep a rooster, since hens will lay eggs even if there is no rooster. So that's why I just give them away.

Ok, thanks so much. You've been a great help! I'll search it and get hopefully get an answer there!
That's great to know. So, do you think I should get hens from chicks or from eggs?
Thanks for your help!

I have had light Brahmas for years. LOVE the breed so calm and mellow !!! Love the feathered feet although mine like to play in mud puddles. They are not my main breed as they truly are not cost efficient BUT they are my eye candy and just plain make me feel good. Other breeds come an go as still looking for the best other "forever breed"
My rooster's have always been nice and mellow for a Roo BUT they can get so big that they can be "tuff" on the hens of other breeds. It does help to keep their spurs trimmed.
