I'm new to the chicken world. We have two back yard chickens. One is a Americana and the other is a Brahma. Our Americana has been laying a egg every other day. Why our Brahma hasn't laid and egg now for 7 months. Both chickens are young. They will be 2 in the fall. We have done everything to get the Brahma to laid extra oyster, good feed, and even taken her to the vet and she is in good health. I just don't understand why she not laying eggs. Do they have a cycle? We live in AZ so I don't think we get to cold. Can understand why she doesn't lay in Aug. and Sept just to hot. But to go this long with out an egg is puzzling. Can any one tell me why she is not laying eggs, I don't know what to do. Thanks.

Have they recently gone thru a molt? Most chickens are molting this time of year or have already since fall. They don't lay during a molt. And many times it takes a while for the hormones to turn back on to trigger laying. Some birds do lay throughout the winter, and others don't. Depends on the breed and the bird itself. Some people add light to the coop to extend the daylight to help keep them laying. Chickens need about 14-16 hours of light to get those eggs rolling. So you might try turning on a light 2 hours before sun up, turning it off during they day, and then turn it back on for 2 hours at sunset. Never leave it on more than 16 hours a day.

Good luck with your birds and enjoy BYC!

Yes she did go thru a molt but she been done with that for about 2 months now. I will try a light. Thanks

Welcome to BYC. Day length is very likely a factor plus in my experience Brahmas have only been fair egg producers.
