Brahma Rooster Temperament

I've had three in the past 1/2 dozen years and none worked out.
First was a bantam buff. He wasn't really aggressive but far from friendly. I bought him as part of an adult trio. His problem was he would wonder and took the girls with him. One day they never came back.
Second was a LF buff 8 got as a freebie adult. Horrible rooster. Only rooster I've ever had that would truly fight to the death with any and every other rooster he could get to. He didn't last long.
3rd was a gold laced I got along with two pullets as week olds. Seem decent temperament but turned at about 7 months old and killed both pullets and started acting aggressive towards me. He didn't last after that.
Love the looks of brahmas but will never own another male.

If you get them as adults- especially from another chicken owner- chances are they're trying to get rid of an aggressive roo and handing him off to you. Raising them by hand is a much better way to get them, as you can "establish dominance" as he grows up and already trusts you. Or you just have really bad luck with roosters ;)

idk if you want bantams but most bantam roosters are the sweetest ever. if you want a bigger bantam roo i have never met a aggressive silkie rooster.

Our Silkie rooster will attack the living tar out of you if you get near one of the girls.
They tend to be like people all have their own disposition and personality

Wow i mean fair point they do have lots of personalities.

I would say that rooster temperament is affected by circumstances quite a bit and they tend to be seriously bothered by toddlers. I have 5 kids and two still in the toddler stage. Roosters hate toddlers. I think the manic and unstable energy that toddlers give off tend to scare them so they go on the attack. The only breed out of the 15 or so that i have had that were safe with toddlers unsupervised every single moment was seramas, but I have to supervise them more so the toddlers don't hurt them on accident lol.

That wasn't the case. The two I got as adults weren't aggressive towards people but agree they were known to have issues from being raised wrong.
We're out in hillbilly land. We don't hand of aggressive roosters to others. We eat them or sell them as "fryers" which we all know for one reason or another they're only good for eating.
I've had a couple other roosters that were aggressive and came to me as adults. Their problem was they were from the suburbs where people try to raise them just as you stated. IMO it is a recipe for disaster.
I don't do the dominance thing. I don't want to be a rooster, they don't want me to be a rooster and I don't play rooster games.
Trying to dominate one just shows them your. Someone to fight with. Maybe you'll win, maybe you won't or maybe you'll win today but he'll always be waiting to test you later on.
I do the hands off approach. They do their rooster thing I do my human thing and there's no issues or competitiveness.
Since paying more attention to how rooster were raised that went bad I've modified my methods to less interaction then I did in the past and since have raised 100s of cockerels and roosters without having an aggressive one.

I was just as interested in a Bahama rooster. It doesn’t matter how you raise a rooster,if it’s genetically aggressive, it’s not much that’s gonna change, hand raised or not.You can’t fix hormones, which often times is the issue.I raise every bird to be friendly and have yet to run across an issue with an aggressive rooster. But I also started off with a rooster who, probably had some good genetics and happens to be extremely friendly and great, so most of his chicks were just as friendly, including the males. But even besides that, ones I get from Tsc turn out to either be friendly ,or just non-aggressive at all.

I know this is an old post but curious how your roo turned out? I have a dark Brahma roo whom is 7 weeks old, twice the size of some of my older 10 week old hens but quite honestly he is sweeter and more “snuggly” than all my girls!

I have 3 light Brahma roosters. I’ve had them since they hatched so I’ve always handled them. They are the sweetest roosters I’ve EVER had!!! They are great with the hens, fiercely protective of the flock, and are very gentle towards people. Hope it works out for you!

I think you must be trolling here, lol. Silkie roos and bantam are terrible! Napoleon syndrome to the max. My silkie roo constantly tried to kill my mom and drew blood. He left and found a new home. Fker
