Brahmas & Cochins...

In my opinion. These breeds are very similar. I love them both. They would have to be my favorites.

Both are laid back, and broodies. Although I do believe brahmas a little better egg layers.

I've never had Cochins, but I would say that Cochins are more broody, though Brahmas lay more eggs. In temperament they're probably the same, as I always hear raves on Cochins and my Brahmas are my favorite of my hatchery flock. (and the Polish. . .

) They're extremely friendly, laid back, curious, and docile. And SO soft and cuddly.

The main difference is that Brahmas are really rare, and Cochins are really common.

I have three little polish, they hatched out jan. 24 I put them out at 8 weeks of age in a temporary coop, and I put Big Blue my cochin rooster in with them, he's the only one even out of all my hens I trust with them! I checked on them the first few nights, and when I looked in, three little heads popped out from all of blues fluff! He was snuggling with them! He's such a good chicken daddy! And the polish follow him everywhere! Its so cute! I'm thinking when I get my new coop done I'll combine the cochins, brahmas and polish together.

I have had bantam cochins for about two years now and mine have never gone broody yet...that could be luck on my part becuase I know several ppl who's cochins are always broody. I like the cochins over the brahmas because they seem to be my most docile breed although I do spend A LOT of time with them so they are VERY tame and we almost have to step on them to move around inside their coop lol. They are just so adorably cute and cuddly! My brahma is skittish and won't allow us to come near her

She is a LF though so maybe the bantam brahmas are different. Never had the bantams.

I've had both. IMO, the Cochins are a tad bit more laid back on this farm. I've had both Cochin Roosters and Hens that have just been awesome - more "dog like" than chicken like. I like the Buff Brahmas a lot too though. I've had a hen, "Cookie" who was very sweet but never a Brahma Rooster - they've seemed more independant. Both breeds have gone broody here - and they make GREAT Moms!

While having both bantam Brahmas and bantam Cochin, here are my observations. I have had two bantam Brahmas go broody out of three hens...and so far, out of 8 bantam Cochin, only one has gone broody. Now as far as personalities, I've noticed while raising chicks of both breeds, the Brahma chicks are more skittish and less interested in being held, while the Cochin chicks will eventually start coming to me when I open the door, letting me pick them up and will stay sitting on my hand. One Cochin girl that I hatched out will follow me around and I have to literally be careful not to step on her. She is the same one that would fly onto my arm when I reached into their brooder. I've also noticed that when raising more chicks together, they obviously get less individual attention, so they are more skittish. On the other hand, my Brahma roo is very nice and easier to catch than most of my Cochin roos. However, it seems that just depends on the personality of the individual birds...one Cochin roo is very friendly and not that difficult to catch. None of them are mean or aggressive, whatsoever.

Take care,

Kristen

I have and had both!

Both are very tame (I did have a hatchery Cochin Roo be mean but, breeder stock is better) You will get more eggs from the LF Brahma than the LF Cochin! not much difference in the Bantams laying!
