Rhode Island Reds are fabulous dual purpose birds. They are prolific egg layers, laying about 260 eggs in the first and second years. They taste more like chicken than the Cornish meat bird and aren’t as tough as others make it seem.

The down sides are that it takes a year or two to fatten them up. They are also very stubborn birds and very independent. I call them my little a holes. I have 24 hens and 3 roosters and they are my favorite breed.

With 5 you’re looking at 4-5 eggs a day of large to extra large sized eggs. They have an attractive shell ranging from pale beige to a rich brown. Being such a small flock they should get used to you and associate you with food and treats.

I always recommend handling them from chicks since they will be less flighty than other birds. They can go broody that will be tough to break. Also expect a 6-8 weeks of not laying due to molt.

Wow, Pysanky eggs are so intricate, they look so time consuming. Do you color fresh eggs, or do you blow out the contents and keep the decorated ones forever? I can't imagine ever cracking one open! Your homegrown chickens on a healthy diet should give you some nice strong shells. Best wishes starting your chicken adventure!
