BRAVE peahen!

Hahaha. Yes, we live in the country. We are lucky in that we have very few problems with predators, considering they are all around us, we live in the woods and have farm fields, woods, and wetlands all near. Not that we don't have any casualties, but we concentrate on discouraging, rather than trapping and killing, as we enjoy the wildlife. That's why we live here. It works pretty well, most of the time.
Same here

we are lucky we can do this many can not.

Yep I seem to get all of the smart raccoons here. They seem to already know what a trap is and know how to avoid it. I am in town unfortunately. When my Grandparents first got their property it was on a dirt road in the country. Now it is a busy 4 lane with a Wal-Mart down the road and other stores. It is still surrounded by woods here mostly. We have coyotes that live in the back that don't do any harm at all and we have a big red tailed hawk pair as well as probably an owl pair.

One good thing about the busy road is it kills a lot of the big bad raccoons. I see lots of big ones dead on the side of the road. They may be smart about traps but they aren't smart about the road.

Most likely been hanging around longer than you think

you would be surprised what lurks around when you are away or when it is dark, get some trail cams and see

I have all kinds of critters around here and keep a pack of dogs to keep them in check, and for as long as i have lived here and had birds i have never lost one to a skunk, coon or possum, lost some eggs here and there out in the fields but never a bird, i think caged birds are at the biggest risk because they can not get away.

Discovered baby skunks being raised under my barbeque grill on the porch one year

OH MY

I went to put my rubber boot on one rainy day, i keep them hung upside down on an old bar stool on the porch anyhow i usually just put them on but this time i decide to shake them out and out fell a snake
ep.gif
I did the hokepokey and never put anything on my feet without shaking them first, sometimes i spray off in them and wait 5 minutes before i shake them.

That is funny. DW bought a boot rack that holds them upside down. We hadn't needed to wear boots for most of the summer but when it finally did rain I got mine down, shook them and a mouse fell out. When DW came out she said that she put hers on and a mouse was still in it.

She just about stroked out dancing around on one foot screaming and trying to get that boot off! Wish I was there!

I probably shouldn't have laughed so hard. I put some bait out and found a dead one in my shoe...

Only time I've even seen Skunks are when they're dead on the road. Snakes I've seen a bit more frequently living in a desert type state, two were actually being raised by my neighbor long ago.

If you own dogs, you can get all the benefits of skunks, even if you don't happen to see the cute stripey little critters on the porch

The babies under the bbq were adorable... I just happened to spot a little bit of black and white fur sticking out of the crack between the metal of the grill and the concrete, otherwise wouldn't have noticed them. But once discovered, momma moved them along pretty quick. Or maybe one of the other neighbor's dogs ate them? Skunks have short, fast lives in that neighborhood....

Oh yeah, and they also looove to hang out in irrigation pipe...
