BRAVE peahen!

Hahaha. Yes, we live in the country. We are lucky in that we have very few problems with predators, considering they are all around us, we live in the woods and have farm fields, woods, and wetlands all near. Not that we don't have any casualties, but we concentrate on discouraging, rather than trapping and killing, as we enjoy the wildlife. That's why we live here. It works pretty well, most of the time.

Today I went to feed the peas and 6 of the 7 were all on the metal perch relaxing and Alto was bellow lying down on the ground. They all flew down to meet me at the door but when they flew down the peahens started honking. They stopped for a while to get treats and food, but eventually some of the peahens were back to honking again. I kept looking all over the pen trying to figure out if there was something inside that could be scaring them. Maybe there was a big hawk flying over. I never figured out what was bothering them today.

They get me worried when they do that!

Today I went to feed the peas and 6 of the 7 were all on the metal perch relaxing and Alto was bellow lying down on the ground. They all flew down to meet me at the door but when they flew down the peahens started honking. They stopped for a while to get treats and food, but eventually some of the peahens were back to honking again. I kept looking all over the pen trying to figure out if there was something inside that could be scaring them. Maybe there was a big hawk flying over. I never figured out what was bothering them today.

They get me worried when they do that!

They have the best eyesight of any animal on my place i swear they can see one of them neighbor cats 1000 feet away in the woods at that, once mine were honking at the fence, i could not see a thing when i got there but they were rubbernecking and honking their heads off , i stood there a good five minutes watching them watching something trying to figure out what they saw, i figured it musta been a snake cause they were looking in the heavey growth on the fence, finely i saw it move, it was a rat snake but man it sure blended in, i turned my head away for a second and then looked back and even knowing where it was i had a hard time seeing it again, see them do the same thing on a tree stump that had new growth on it, turned out to be a little bitty ol frog.

Had a peacock on the edge of my roof the other day honking and looking towards the fence row 50 foot away , again i saw nothing then a vole hoped out of the brush and ran into another weedy area, pretty impressive eye sight indeed.

Peahens have their own minds about everything, anyway. They are truly a different breed...even from the peacocks! Last summer my son was laughing because he was practicing hitting a ball with a bat just for something to do. He'd wack the ball out into the field. Snap (our other peahen) would run up to it and threaten it with her tail up. It was hilarious.

I love their eyesight. It makes me wonder what we are missing out on since they can see in more colors than we can and they can see further. It must be interesting to have bird eyes, although I wouldn't want to have to turn my head all the time to get a good look at something!
