After having my flock outside for over a year, all of that free ranging, I finally lost one to a daring and very brazen predator today. I suspect a fox or a coyote was the culprit and it attacked right in my front yard with three men working within fifty feet of where it snatched the hen and then ran off down the street with it!

I've always been live and let live and often see coyotes and foxes while working hay but after this episode that is no longer the case. Open warfare has been declared!

A bobcat got one of our hens while we were out in the yard about 5 months ago. He/she jumped over a 6 ft fence, grabbed the chicken and was gone in seconds. We now no longer free range our chickens. Good luck because it will keep coming back for more!!

The feathery ones are in duress vile now looking out through the harsh wire at all the green stuff growing around the yard. I am afraid they will have to remain in that condition until I can figure out how to deal with this problem. I hate to see them locked up like this for they do love to roam but I hate dead friends even more.
