Hi all would anyone be able to advise us on whether breadfruit, cooked or raw is safe for our pullets? Our tree has an abundance at the moment. We eat it cooked. I googled Mexican breadfruit as mentioned in this post but it doesn't look anything like the ones we grow. Many thanks

Thank you for your question. We have not done recent work with breadfruit.

As with any plant, when in doubt, do not offer it to your animals. If your pullets are being fed a nutritionally-complete feed, then it is best to not provide those birds with any other feed stuffs. A pullet’s ability to become a good laying hen is dependent on her ability to develop her body size at the proper rate.

When using a commercially-made feed that is complete, she should eat the proper amount of nutrition to grow at the correct rate so that her skeletal frame develops appropriately. When you start supplementing with treats and other items, the nutrition in the feed is diluted, and the pullet’s ability to grow correctly is compromised. It is best to wait until the pullet is laying eggs before supplementing her diet.

Thank you for your reply. That's great advice, we are new to keeping chickens so we are grateful for you sharing your wisdom.
Our 4 girls are approx 12 weeks now (we were told from the farm we purchased them from), they are in a coop at night but are free to range in our garden, we have a small variety of fruit trees but probably nothing the girls would fancy, breadfruit, sour sop and an abundance of lime trees. They are on a layers pellet food but during the day pick up the many bugs including the venomous centipedes

....we were quite worried when we saw them catch and eat the first one but they dispatched it very quickly and efficiently!
