I've herded many a cow from my back yard back into the meadow just because the grass is always greener !!

What kind of fence are you thinking? If you are thinking some kind of board fence, I'd still run a strand of electric around it to keep them off of it. Cattle love to rub up against stuff to scratch themselves, and break stuff easily. lol

There are some gorgeous board fences around here but they also come with a gorgeous price tag. We'll eventually get to the fencing and most likely will use the stadard cattle fence topped with 2 strands of barbed wire.

Yeah, yeah, lots of people don't like barbed wire but I do.

I enjoy going to them too, I haven't been in a while though. Do you go to the one in Hutch?

We had a friend that we were getting ours from, but he has stopped raising enough for friends too. I hated losing that source. For Christmas he brought us about 20 lbs of homegrown hamburger!

Around here most people use barbed wire. I think it is best if you use a combination. Something stronger is really needed where they eat.

Not very often....we usually go to the one in Salina. That's where we sell our calves. Once in a while we'll take a cull cow to Hutch.

Except for certain parts of the corrals, all we use is barbed wire. Most of our electric fence is a light guage barbed wire.

Buying a roll of barbed wire around here is like dealing crack in an alley. People freak out if they hear you ask for it. Seriously. I was in the co-op one day and someone came in asking for a roll of barbed wire and another man went off on a diatribe about the evils of barbed wire and the next thing you know 4 people were telling this man how unresponsible and cruel he was for wanting barbed wire for fencing. I almost felt like I needed to write it down and pass it over covertly to the stock guy.

This is horse country. Big time horse country. These people put small fortunes into these elaborate wood fences around these estates. I live within 10 miles of the equestriain park where Christopher Reeves took his life altering spill if that gives you an idea of the mindset. Million dollar horse country.
