Breed Confusion: Breeder says one thing... Chick says different. Marans Veterans Needed!!!

I also have two gold laced wyandottes coming that my friend picked up for me. She will be bringing them thurs. They came from a feed store that got them from Privett Hatchery. But at least they will be what they say they are...

to me the legs on the am's seem a bit off i would try posting their pics on their breed specific thread in the breed and genetics forum and see what those folks think as well. as for gender i would wait till they are at least 6 weeks for that and maybe then breed can better be seen in them.

Thanks for your time and answering my questions! You've been a big help!

Your "Ameraucana" looks to have yellow skin (you said orangey, right?), which is completely incorrect for an Ameraucana at all. They are a white skinned bird with slate legs. If you look at the soles of the feet, they should appear white, not yellowish.

Is it even pea combed or single combed? Just trying to help you figure what you do have, but you may not be able to with some of them until later on.

I think the only cuckoo here is the breeder. I have a Lemon Cuckoo Orp and she has had the barring from the first day I got her.

You probably will not get your money back on the cockerels. I'd just keep em, and process the ones you don't want at 16-18 weeks. I know some people may be grossed out by that, but, you may as well get use out of them, they'd make really good soup, tacos, shredded chicken sandwiches. I agree with PP about getting chickens from some one here, or go the your state thread, and see when you have a chickenstock, or swap meet... get some chicks then. Sorry you got caught up with a jerk-a-puss breeder.

the black chick thats suppose to be marans looks like a black sex link chick. Which could have a cuckoo marans mother and any gold/red roo as a father. I bet a roo got into her breeding pen without her knowing

One of my babies looks just like yours. I have 18 babies that I hatched out on Mothers day. I bought eggs from someone local, one dozen pure marans (black/blue) and one dozen mixed breed eggs. The mixed breed are from a Wheaten Marans Rooster who is in a pen with pure Ameraucana, Barred Rock, Black Marans and Cuckoo Maran hens. I don't know who is who though lol. I can tell the Black Marans that are turning out to be roosters, and I can tell the ones that are from the Ameraucana hen because they have muffs, but I can't tell which are the pure Marans and which are the mixed. I will take pictures tomorrow of the one that looks just like yours. It is exactly like yours, black with brown coming in on the feathers. Sorry I'm not much help beyond that info.
I posted these pics yesterday. So sorry for being redundant however, I just got off the phone with the breeder/lady who I bought this little one from. This first picture was taken on the 8th (day I got her). Was told she was about a week old maybe 8-10 days. She is supposed to be a Cuckoo Marans. Notice no white cuckoo barring. black legs. I called her today and she said there was absolutley no way she could be a Black Ameraucana. She then went on to tell me that she will go through her molting phases and color will change. Cuckoos don't have black legs. Correct me if I'm wrong. And every pic I've looked at of 1 week to 4 week old Cuckoos have the white cuckoo barring on their wing feathers. As well as not having black legs and feet. Is there anyway this little one can still be a cuckoo? Is this lady confused or blowing smoke up my butt?

Bellow taken 6/18/12 (roughly 2 1/2 - 3 weeks old)

Now please look at this link from BYC of a "Black Ameraucana" They look like twin sisters!!!
http://www.google.com/imgres?hl=en&...4&start=19&ndsp=24&ved=1t:429,r:11,s:19,i:171

Notice the feet/legs from the link with a pic of my chicks legs and feet. I don't know how much it means but I'm really just holding out hope that there are some cuckoos that "wait awhile" to show off their "true colors". If anyone has any wisdom on this breed or can point me in the right direction... Please let me know

I looked at the bottom of both look orange. and from what I can tell about their comb (I'm VERY novice at this) its a pea comb... what do you think with that info?
