My son's chicken he showed at fair this year and got Junior Grand Champion Showmanship with just jumped the fence and got killed by our neighbors dog :( needless to say he is devastated! I am looking for a better breed to replace it with for showing for next year. He is a smaller framed kiddo and needs a smaller breed bird but needs one that will like being handled and WILL NOT fly over fences? Silkies came to mind but I don't know how they do with showing for 4H, any other small breed birds that wont fly over very tall fences? Please help I want to give him an idea of a better bird for him soon to help with the blow of what happened!

Oh. I was hoping you were closer. What breed was the one that he lost?

One thing I know it's they say clean legged birds are easier for showing because you don't have to worry about broken and dirty leg feathers on top of everything else.

Typically when it comes to Large Fowl, the smaller breeds tend to be better fliers. Leghorns, Hamburgs, and such can fly very well. Your medium Large Fowl tend not to fly over fences very much. New Hampshires, Rhode Island Reds, and other medium weight fowl should be fine.

Bantams such as silkies may work if you like silkies. I don't know much about other bantam breeds and their flying abilities.

My vote goes to Old English game bantams (OEGBs). They can fly very well, but usually don't, especially the ones that are handled alot. They are fast to get away from predators (in case the dog gets hungry again), they come in many beautiful color varieties, they are small and easy to handle, are a loveable breed, and they show very well!

Mine fly quite well and frequently despite being friendly and tame, but it's one thing I love about them. They like to go up in trees and they are curious and brave so I don't doubt they'd want to explore the other side of a fence. I personally won't get into them to show because if your show makes they have to be dubbed (combs and wattles cut off). Don't get me wrong, they are my favorite, but I wouldn't recommend them in this situation.

Yes the dubbing is a good point i forgot about. :(
I have had a couple that would fly on top of the pens (10' high) but they don't go for the trees, and rarely go outside my fence when free ranging.

It was a blue andalusian she was a young pullet so he could still handle her
