Breed of bird recommended for 10yo's showmanship bird for 4-H

my 6year old daughter won PeeWee showmanship at the highland APA show with her large fowl Polish. the judge said he had never seen a polish that was that calm. she handles her birds everyday. find something she likes and go with it . I think the bantam wynadottes are adorable. most of the kids had OEGBs

My son was 7 when he started showing. He is 11 now. He has always shown our bantam sumatras. He has won showmanship every time with his pullets. I think what maters more than the breed of chicken you choose, is the time you spend with it. If you handle your birds DAILY, and get you a show cage to pratice getting them in and out, you'll do fine.

I'd recommend Modern Game Bantams. They are very small so are easy for small hands to control. Also they all seem to be natural pets. I've never seen on that was flighty or aggressive.

Thanks for the many great suggestions! She will definitely be the one picking out the bird, but I want to have some limitations. This is the 2nd bird (roosters) we have purchased for showmanship and although they are bantom sized, they are fairly large. Last show the judge said they are really too big to be called bantoms. One of her roosters has also gotten mean with her this year. He doesnt bother me in the least, but he is always attacking her. We have worked on her carrying him around and showing him who is boss, but she is already afraid of him and I think he senses it. He has given her many cuts, scratches and bruises and I think its time to retire him to the chicken yard. We keep her showmanship birds in our basement to keep them better conditioned. We have several shows coming up in the fall and we will keep our eyes open.

My daughters have shown Old English Game, Ameraucana bantam, and call ducks for showmanship. I think the smaller the better, as the child can handle it easier. We always have used a hen or pullet for showmanship too.

Are there any shows coming up in your area? If so, check and see if they have sale coops and check out what is available. That is how we got started.

I would show you daughter a hatchery catalog.

I do this with many people interested in poultry,

It gives them a general Idea of what they like & are looking for.

Once they pick a breed they more or less want, or they really like. I try to help them to order from breeders with a reputation.

I use hatchery catalogs because they are very informative on most breeds, with their orgins,colors, temperments,looks, & history of some of the breeds.

Many people like to look at catalogs even though they don't order from them just to get info on a breed.

I would look at feathersite it's Not a hatchery but has many breeds info, & pics of almost all color varieties.

I like the cackle hatchery catalog it gives simple info on each breed, & shows good pics of some breeds & their colors.

Stromberg & Murray Mcmurry hathery have nice color pics of some breeds though most are paintings or draw outs, but has nice source of breed info.

I have never cared for hatchery stock,

& would not ever recomend it, to someone wanting to show.

Most hatchery catalogs if not all hatchery catalogs are free.

I got some black cochins from idea hatchery this year and they are not only beautiful but have wonderful personalities

here are two at 6 or 7 months old.
