Breed stereotypes!

Generalization: Silkies will get picked on and should not be kept on a mixed flock; they go broody often; not reliable layers when they aren't broody
Observation: My Silkies hold their own, even with much larger birds and they are broody more often then not; they lay like champs!

Generalization: BRs are known to be on the aggressive side
Observation: My friendliest breed; lap chickens

Generalization: Welsummers are docile
Observation: They are neurotic!

Generalization: Orpingtons are friendly and easy going.

You almost got me with the orpingtons

The most neurotic chicken I ever had was a Welsummer-I couldn't give her away fast enough. But the ones I have now are sweethearts

Does anyone wanna share any general observations or generalizations about the typical common breeds we all know and love I.e: Barred rocks, Rhode Island reds, buff Orpington, white leghorn, Polish, Silkie ect…
In my experience so far:
Rhode Island Red= curious, funny, friendly

Brahma= Sweet, cuddly, docile

Australorp= Quiet, skittish, shy

Buff Orpington=smart, curious, friendly

Speckled Sussex= sweet, chirpy

Golden Wyandotte= Independent

I got silkies thinking they would be sweet and cuddly my hen would come when you called her name and cuddle in your lap, she passed away sadly. Which has left me with a terror of a rooster. I have to keep him contained or he attacks everyone on sight. 🙄 I might always think of silkie roosters as vicious now and the hens as the cuddly ones. EDIT: I still love my roo, he is just cranky his lady is gone.

I've only had one Evil Silkie cockerel since raising them. He became soup. He'd attack everyone(Birds, humans alike), attempted attacking us through the fence.

All my other's are friendly.

I had a Rhodbar, who's a RIR with barring. She was extremely mean! She would attack any chicken to draw blood just for fun! She's skittish towards humans. I would never owe a RIR just because of her. My silkie & polish mix was a great layer when she was not broody! She was super sweet with kids and laid through whole winter without adding light to the coop even when she was almost 2 year old. She was also the smartest chicken I have had. Sadly, she died from Marek.
