Hi, I am looking for suggestions for breeds/crosses of chickens that would be suitable for me. I live in a fairly cold climate (winters can get as cold as -40) so I would like something that is fairly hardy. I am just starting my research but it looks like breeds with a peacomb would work better for me? I am interested in layers/multi-purpose birds who are generally friendly and easy-keepers for a beginner like me.

I am just starting my research on all things chicken, so any help or experiences with birds who would fit the bill would be greatly appreciated.

You should look into Chentechlers. They are a Canadian dual purpose breed, so should fit your needs quite well. Wyandottes are probably another good choice. Both come in an array of colors. I agree you'll want to stick with small combed birds, as frostbite is an awful thing to deal with. Good luck :)
