Black Australorps! The classic haha...
I have personally never been a huge fan of Wyandottes after owning some simply because they tended to be bossy and egg eaters. And my singular Olive Egger was the flightiest chicken I have ever owned and loved to eat the tail feathers out of the other hens.
My Australorps have been big girls who lay lots of big brown eggs. Middle of the pecking order. Just a necessity for me! I was super bummed when they were all sold out in my order...
Of course, these are just my experience! I'm sure people have had a amazing experiences with those breeds. It may be important to note that those breeds came from My Pet Chicken though...

Perfect! I'm ordering from My Pet Chicken.

I picked cream legbar for the blue eggs and awesome good looks! :love
Olive eggers are a hybrid produced from many crosses. As long as there is a blue egg layer (cream leg bar, ameraucana, purebred not EE,) parent and a dark brown egg layer parent (welsommer, marans, etc) that is all that matters. Personality of the OE will often depend on parentage.

Hi! I'm new here, and want to order chicks myself. Can you tell me where you are ordering from? It sounds like they have a great selection. I am looking for: black australorps, buff orpingtons, ameraucanas, cream leg bars, and marans. I'm having a hard time finding a place I can get a variety, but not have to order too many. I cannot have more than a dozen. Thank you!

I order from MyPetChicken, for their wide selection, sexed bantams, and close location to me. They also have AMAZING customer service I'm pretty sure that they have all those breeds, but possibly not pure ameraucanas. They definitely have easter eggers, though! They have low minimums but it depends on how close you are. I'm able to order a minimum of 3 standards.

So, I know I'm all about EEs, but I think Australorps are your best breed here.

Why;
Cold hardy, heat tolerant. The black fluffy feathers is not great in the heat but they manage where I live (up to 100*F summers), and they are spectacular in the cold.
Hardy hardy. They're generally physically robust birds with few breed specific issues.
They lay like a boss, even through the winter. They're moderately broody. They're big enough to justify eating retired hens or extra roos. So whatever you need them for in a practical sense they're very good.
They're deeply personable and friendly.
They're very pretty when in good health with iridescent feathers.

Cons;
They're so personable they have trouble spooking at predators. This can make them your first losses in a predator-rich environment.
Roosters are single combed - not good in VERY cold winters, not a problem on hens.
Their larger bodies makes them much less feed efficient.

Still IMO one of the best all around chickens you could possibly ever own.

Thank you! Will check them out. I've been researching breeds and care and am finally ready to buy chicks. I'm very excited, and thrilled to have found this site.
