Breed???

I got this pullet along with 5 others a few weeks ago. They were all supposed to be Starlight Eggers (2 light, 2 medium brown, 2 dark brown) although I thought only the light ones are, I still bought them (all were 2$ each). The medium colored are regular Easter Eggers or Olive Eggers. Then I noticed after bringing them home, that 2 were actually black, not dark brown and they had feathered feet.

Now I'm trying to figure out which breed they are. I just know they're not a bantam breed due to size.

I'm not really good at figuring chick breeds out. Thanks for your help.

The top breeds that I think of when I see feathered legs are Cochins, Brahmas and Marans . . . I'm sure there are many others though. You could look those up and see if any day old chick photos looked like yours.

I was looking up the Marans breeds, she seems to resemble the French Copper chicks. I'm adding a photo from the day I got them on 7/29, they were about 10-14 days old. The employee at the Rural King where I got them tried to say they were 4 weeks, mine older ones were hatched 6/24, they were 4 1/2 weeks.

(I use an old metal chick feeder as a roost for chicks)

I'd say your estimated age is spot on based on wing development and lack of feathering anywhere else on the chick. It's hard to say with black chicks since there are so many that look similar. My barnyard mixes looked alot like these when they were younger. You'll get a better idea once they start getting their juvenile feather coloring in a couple more weeks.

They're adorable! I try to get mine on markdown too. Well except the 2 lavender guineas, the 2 ducks and my Silkies, most all my hens were $0.25-$2 over the years.

My youngest came from Rural King via Hoover's Hatchery. I've got the 4-5 weeks old chicks, the 4 Silkie Eggers hatched on 6/24, a Silkie Egger cockerel hatched 6/12, 2 lavender guineas bought 6/10 (hatched 6/8), a Saxony drake and a white crested female duck - both 4 1/2 months old and huge. Oh and a 5-6 week old cinnamon queen pullet (courtesy of employee at Rural).

Unfortunately I lost this little one, my only Silkie chick from my own Silkies.

My 2 lavender guineas and home hatched Silkie Egger 6/12 - he was a couple hours old.

I thought I'd taken photos of the 2 guineas, I guess I forgot to.

Once my Silkie hen finishes molting and resumes laying, I letting whoever is broody set on some eggs regardless of when.

If I'm understanding correctly you bought them from Rural King. Pretty good chance they Are from Hoovers. Check what Marans (mixes) they offer.

I contacted Hoover's Hatchery and they were quick to reply. They confirmed that they're black copper marans. This makes me happier as I lost my black majestic marans a few weeks ago to unknown circumstances. She was constantly broody and a little sweetheart all the time. She'd stand up so I could collect eggs, never pecked me once. I had promised her a few to hatch come fall, then found her gone. I've had Cuckoo Marans that were mean and even meaner when broody on eggs. I let one hatch an egg, she tried killing the chick, every time it was out of her sight to eat/drink, she attacked him, hurting him. I had no choice but to remove her. He grew into a beautiful rooster.

Hopefully by February they'll be laying some beautiful dark brown eggs.

Thanks on the signature comment. That's the truth, I tell myself no, no, no that I'm not getting any chicks, then I find the older discounted bin. A few times I've resisted but only due to a full nursery and some in the house too. And it's not necessarily chicks, I've bought ducklings and guineas that way too - my recent 4 were full price because I knew they'd sell fast.

They're beautiful! And the RK employee told you 4 weeks? Lol can you imagine bins full of 4 week old chicks inside the store? My first bantam group is 4 weeks now, and man can they fly! That would be a thing to witness for sure. The RK employee who sold me my bantams thought bantam was a breed on its own. So there's that.

Congrats on all your beautiful birds! I bet you'll end up with some stunners as you hatch out chicks.
