Welcome,
I'm not a breeder, but do have a broody Cayuga duck. I am still a newbie at the hobby duck farm, but in the near future may let my Cayugas or Welsh Harlequin sit on a few eggs to see what happens.

I've ordered all my ducklings from Metzer Farms without problems.

Breed choice is going to be mostly your personal preference in my opinion. Both Metzer Farms and The Livestock Conservancy have informative breed comparison charts. I picked the Cayuga and Welsh Harlequin for the following reasons in no particular order:

-Both breeds are listed as endangered, especially the Welsh. I don't plan on eating them, but conservation of the breed gives my little farm some purpose.
-The Cayuga is one of very few native American breed of duck. I've also spent some time near Lake Cayuga of the finger lakes region of NY, so the choice was a little sentimental.
-Both breeds are said to be calm, good foragers, and good mothers. I interpret this to mean low maintenance.
-I wanted more than one breed in my flock, and I wanted the breeds to be somewhat uncommon. Just personal preference.

Good luck,
Rich

Thanks! I have been leaning towards the Welsh Harlequin, Rouen or the silver appleyards for some of the reasons you mentioned about being good mothers and foragers. I am nervous about ordering the ducks online which is why I was hoping to find a breeder but if not I won't have much choice :)

Hi Rich, I know this is an older post, do you still have your Cayuga Ducks? I am interested in acquiring a pair.
Thanks so much!
