Does anyone know of a good resource for the basics or a good into into breeding and genetics of chickens? I'm sure there is a forum on here but I couldn't find it! . Thanks!
Yes, there are many threads on these subjects here at BYC. See the search window at the top of the page? It is very accurate. Just type in "breeding and genetics" in quotes. As far as books go, I think the top three are the American Poultry Association Standard of Perfection 59.00 and well worth it. http://www.amerpoultryassn.com/store.htm The 13.00 Black and White Illustrations are also very educational for studying breed type.
Sigrid van Dort and Hancox and friends book The Genetics Of Chicken Colours-The Basics. http://chickencolours.com/ It is easy to understand and the latter half of the book is a spectacular color atlas of poultry colors captioned with genomes. The 3rd book is also by Van Dort. It is The Genetics Of Chicken Extremities. A bit more studious, it coveres the genetics of "everything other than plumage" which was covered in the 1st book. Chicken books are as expensive as the best dog books. The SOP is 59.00 USD plus Tax, S&H. the two Van Dort books are about 77.00 USD each plus Tax, S&H. .
