I'm looking to create my own dual purpose breed of chicken. I hatched out some eggs from the farmer up the road and I'm in love with the chicks I got. They are Buff Orpington/Dominique crosses - the Dominique roo who fathered them is massive he makes my BO roo look tiny. I'd like to breed them to all have the rose comb with the unique color pattern some of the chicks turned out with. They are very large, relatively fast growing (I think they will be ready for slaughter before 20 weeks), and good foragers.
I know it's going to probably take my entire lifetime to perfect a breed, but I want to attempt it. This is going to be my big life long project.
So I'm looking for resources on breeding and chicken genetics. Are there any good books on the subject?
