E-mail PM Re: How to get Blue-laced Red coloringYou breed Blue into a Gold Laced bird.
Lacing can be Black,Blue,Dun or White on Gold/red or Silver birds.
However White Laced Silver birds will just look white.

To produce a the bird you want, I would suggest using the following birds:red cochin (if you can not find this you will have to use a rhode island red), a gold laced cochin and a blue cochin.

Can you get these birds?

PM me if I do not return to this string.

I should be able to get those from IDEAL.
If thats what I'd need I could add that to the order we're making soon.

So just use those as the breeding stock, the way suggested above?

I know what Tim is thinking! The red is for mahogany (the red part of blue laced red). I will let him explain it.
I dont know an easy way to get it in polish unless you can get some of the white laced red from the creator. Oh, well Ideal also has red polish so I dunno...

If you do not breed in the mahogany and autosomal red from the red cochin, you will get a buff/gold bird laced with blue. If you can not find a good red (mahogany red) bird to use in the breeding regimen then you will have to find a rhode island red. You want a RIR that is dark red.

If you are not worried about the depth of red color, then you can skip the red cochin and produce a blue laced buff/gold bird. I believe that the color of the bird will be diluted some simply because of the feathering associated with the cochin.

All together you are looking at about six to eight years of breeding to get the bird you want. That is producing one cross per year. I will get in four crosses every two years and a few months.

You can cut that in half by producing a buff bird with blue lacing.

What do you think?

I really think that sounds great.

it is a beautiful coloring, and doesn't sound like a very poular one either.

I will def. look further into this. Right now Im just looking into what I really want to get serious in breeding, and learning all the ropes, so I can jump in and not go thru a few years of breeding, then decide to refocus efforts and change goals.

Thanks for all the great info!

Making the buff laced with blue.

Use a gold laced male that is a good looking bird- good color and type etc.

Cross a gold laced male bird with splash or blue females = F1 birds that will be basically a blue bird or black and blue birds

Back cross the F1 blue females to the gold laced male. = F2 birds some will be basic black or blue while others will have poor lacing (some black some blue)- what I call psuedo spangling.

Pick the best looking F2 buff and blue laced and back cross to the gold laced male = F3 with much better lacing.

Back cross the F3 blue laced birds to the gold laced male= F4 which should be some good birds but the red color will be more like a buff/gold color.

To make the gold/buff color darker you will have to out cross your best F4 blue laced male to a rhode island red= F1

Pick the best F1 females ( darkest red with some black pseudo spangling and black in the tail and wings) and back cross to the blue laced male.

Continue to back cross to the blue laced male- pick the darkest red colored birds to back cross to the blue laced male.

After a few generations you should have what you want.

You can also cross the gold laced male to the RIR ato produce a darker red and black laced bird. Eventually you will have a red bird with black lacing. Then cross to the blue laced birds to improve the color.

I hope this makes some sense. I have been up since 4 this morning and I am not sure I am thinking straight.

Since the breed is not really defined (cochins or polish, maybe), talk about getting them from a hatchery, plus needing to cross breed to bring in mahogany, wouldn't crossing to a blue laced red wyandotte make things a lot easier?
