Breeding Buff Leghorns

I could stay quite , say nothing, not show, not take pictures of my birds, sell stock,or give advice to those seeking it. Yes it would prevent my nose getting bent by critics. However the friendships and benefits of knowing my variety better, far outway. It makes me look at things and that makes me a better breeder. I would like to think that I am helping others along the way also.I would like to be positive and share, and think it comes back to us. Dan H.

Dan i for one am very pleased that you are the sharing type as you have helped me out a lot so far in what to do and what not to do .

I wish more breeders had your out look on life and shared what they know about breeding different breeds . The way i look at it is whats the point in knowing if you can't help someone along the way with it .

As for your birds they are some of the best ive ever seen and you should be very proud of them .... No one i know has the perfect bird but yours come very close.

I agree with Dan. Sharing info benefits all. Too many people think they get ahead by keeping their experiences a secret.

Good breeders are the harshest critics of their own birds, so usually if someone points out a detail as a flaw, they've already seen it...and dedicated breeders aren't offended at contructive criticism in the least.

I owe you guys some photos of my Buff Rock x White Rock crosses. I know this is a Leghorn thread, but in this case the breed doesn't matter much, since it's just to show the results of the cross. I'll try to get some pics taken this weekend. Interesting results, and all over the place as far as color, from almost pure White to almost all Black.

BTW, this is probably one of the better threads on BYC as far as staying on point and providing useful info for those that contribute and those that surf in just to read. As Keith has indicated in previous posts I am working on Buff Minorcas and am hesitant to add anything about those on this thread, but don't really want to start a separate thread either. So before I were to include Buff Minorca info on this thread, I'd ask all of your opinions. As a teaser, I am on year 2 after crossing Buffs and Blacks with very promising results so far.

cochinman as i was the one that start this thread i don't have a problem with you adding your minorca's to it. It's still the same colour and thats what this is really all about THE COLOUR and getting it right. I'm sure every one can still give judgement on type and colour on either leghorns , rocks or minorcas. looking forward to seeing the pic's. i have some chicks to post as well hoping to do that this weekend.

I'm with Shane, it is mostly about the color. When I met Dan last January at the NEPC show he was kind enough to take me around the show hall and discuss the buff color in many of the breeds being displayed. It was very educational.

I'm also with Shane and Birch Run Farm, it is mostly about the color.
I like to see how your chicks are Cochinman.
I have done the cross with the Buff Leghorn Bantams and the Buff Dutch Bantams.
I will make some pictures to show them to you all.

Well I have to say I am guilty in part of steering Tom off the path a bit,but it has been wonderful talking about buff color and crossing buff etc. If it were not for me asking Tom to get me a few Buff Leghorns off Doug Cauthorn in his state,I do not think Tom would have Buff Leghorns now.I have worked with Tom on the Buff Minorca project from the beginning.I am also guilty of talking him into the Black Minorca /Buff Minorca cross.I am also guilty of getting him into my Lavender (self blue)Minorca project, which in turn got him into Lavender bantam Cochins.Sorry Tom. Well Tom I really really enjoy all our emails and visits and I hope you do to:hmmh yes we talk about Buff Cochins,Buff Rock bantams,Buff Columbian Cochin bantams,Silver Laced Cochin largefowl, etc. etc. Lucky for me I do not have the room for all the varieties that Tom does, but I still like them. Hi All,

Here you can see the white tails.
Also some F1 have a little yellow coloured leggs.

I hope you liked them.......Arie

I'd be thrilled if you guys talked about the long range results, color wise, of crossing black and buff. At two different times and two different breeds this color cross was considered but my wife decided to give up the buff Minorcas and I never did try the buff /black Cochin cross. Large fowl. I'd be real interested in hearing from those of you who have done the color cross and kept with it. I grew up with the idea always being touted that it was easy to improve feather and type on buff Cochin bantams by infusing them with good blacks. I think it could be possible but don't believe it was easy. If it was that easy there'd have been more and better buff Cochin bantams I think.

Probably true about the Buff Leghorns. I hadn't planned on getting into Buff Leghorns, but I have a weakness for any Buff variety for the most part. Dan and I have some good conversations at shows and via emails and I was more than happy to help Dan out with his Lavender Minorca project. I sincerely appreciate Dan's input to my proposed breeding match ups, and it's great to have a friend who shares my affinity for the Buff variety. There are days when I think about getting out of one or more of the varieties that I am working with but I don't do it because I am not sure where a couple of the varieties would wind up with one less person working with them. Golden Laced Cochins is a perfect example. I am on my third year working with them, and I think I have made some significant progress this year using birds from a cross I did last year and trusting in the genetics to produce results to support my approach.

However, this is a thread on the Buff color so.....Here are a couple pics of the oldes two chicks from a Buff X White Rock cross. I'll take some more photos of the younger chicks once they get a bit older. The ckl is starting to feather in with what looks a bit like Columbian markings although he's very creamy in base color with slate undercolor. The pullet
has slate undercolor as well. I'll post some Minorca pics in a separate post later.
