"Breeding discussion - When to and when not to breed"

Can anyone help me identify what quality these golden WH are? I am wondering whether it is worth it to use them in a breeding program, or if I should just keep them on for eggs.

Here are a few examples of the Anconas. Now because there is such a wide number of markings and no official standard has been put in place keep in mind this is just my views on each bird given my knowledge of the breed. Sorry took me so long to get it up... I'm doing 10 things at once on the computer tonight.

Cull Blue Drake Above:
  • Solid pattern on his back with no broken markings
  • Olive bill (Not spots it was a solid olive bill)
  • Overweight/Over sized (Huge drake more of a heavyweight breed size)

Cull Black Duck Above:
  • Solid pattern/Over marked
  • Incorrect eye color (hers were brown)

Cull Black Young Drake Above:
  • Under marked
  • No feet spotting
  • Minimal under eye markings

Cull Chocolate Drake Above:
  • I posted this one to show the body carriage. He was almost horizontal and traveled much slower than the birds with correct carriage.

SQ Black Duck Above:
  • Nice Medium spotted bill
  • Beautiful broken pattern with haphazard markings
  • Nice under eye markings
  • Nice carriage (although not the best pic to show that off)

(I think it's also important to point out her flaws as well because no duck is perfect although some come extremely close)
  • Could use a few more spots on her feet (she only has a couple small ones)
  • Although she has some spotting on her chest she could use a bit more

SQ Black Drake Above:
  • Nice chest markings
  • Nice broken pattern
  • Nice carriage
  • Great eye markings

Faults
  • Could use a couple more spots on his feet
  • Would like to see some spots on the wings themselves

A great Animal breeder software for keeping records is kintraks
This is what I use for my ducks, chickens, sheep and goats. Originally I got it for my rabbits but it's been several years since I sold out of my show lionheads. It is a great software for keeping records on your stock though.... It even has a place for show placings and winnings. Pedigree, Family tree features. Health records on individual birds, expenses etc......

Free upgrades, Great support and continued feature development at an affordable price make this one of the best record keeping software on the market. No I don't get a kick back for endorsing it, but I strongly recommend it to other serious breeders to assist their breeding programs.

GREAt share thank you! thank you

also thank you for sharing the Ancona pictures and details

I hope other breeders will post photos and critique there breed as well for others to learn visually

Hey Dwen.............. you would need to get a copy of the SOP and find someone who raises WH to help you judge your stock. Hopefully someone on here who raises them will chime in, but not everyone on BYC keeps for other than pet

What is it called to find on a google search? and can you find one for less than $60? (college student budget)

Dwen you have to buy it from the APA directly, its listed in their online store.

Coyote ... downloaded and it is much easier to use and enter data in than the program I was using. I was able to import info too and dump the old program.
