Breeding for a certain trait.

Got a quick question. If I am looking to breed a certain trait into my line of birds, should the hen or rooster carry the specific trait I'm trying to breed in? Which parent would have the best chance of carrying over the desired trait?

That depends on hte trait. If it is related to a sex-linked gene, mother pass it to sons only and fathers pass it to both sons and daughters. If it is not sex-linked, then it doesn't matter.

Ok. More specific, I would like to cross a sebright into american gamefowl to get the hen feather pattern because both male and femsle sebrights have the hen feather gene. Is it possible?

it will take several generations to get the color correct and to breed true but start with a sebright father and a game mother. a sebright father will give the offspring a better more correct color than a sebright mother would

select the birds with the best and most correct color then breed back the the sebright parent keep then once again choose the best and most correct birds and breed those to the half sebright half game parents.

There is nothing wrong with Lots of Chickens advise. I just want to know more information.



The henny feathering trait is dominant. If you cross a game with a sebright, the offspring will be henny feathered.

From this point, how you breed the birds depends on the genes found in the American game and the sebright, and which variety of American game you want to produce.

If your American game is black, it is less work to produce a henny feathered black American game ; if you want a silver sebright henny feathered variety of American game and you are crossing a golden sebright with a gold wheaten American game- it is impossible to produce a silver sebright American game

Pictures of the American game and sebright along with a more detailed description of what you want in the end is needed to give you a specific breeding regimen ( that matches the genetic makeup of the birds).

Well havent got my sebright stock yet, but I have some Mel Sims Hatch and some Albany. Probably start with a Mel Sims hen. Which sebright rooster would be best, silver or gold?
