BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

I wish I had a broody! Anything interesting to hatch under her? ;)

Our Sulm boys still aren't doing the job, they're still young so I'm not expecting it to happen anytime soon.... BUT our pullet has only skipped one day since hitting point of lay, they're more pink-ishs and not so white, like GFF claims (I'm questioning the purity of their Sulm stock, honestly).

Yeah experienced the same thing- was surprised when the barbezieux started laying tinted eggs.. uh?? they changed that detail after I and several others contacted them.

apparently several of their rhodebar stock laid green eggs- supposed to be brown egg breed.

If I had the room I'd put a few NN eggs under her. I've got a few green egg laying NN girls who've been well service by my beloved Heisenberg and would love to hatch out those eggs, but I really have zero room for any broodies or more babies right now. I seriously need to get some butchering done.

Change of subject.... Am I the only one with a broody hen in January? Seriously, it's January!
:th

I had one of my giant/silkie crosses go broody Nov and Dec. Weeks of throwing her off the nest and outside. She'd be setting right after even without eggs. Benefit was I never had any frozen split eggs in that coop :-D
She did finally quit a couple weeks ago.

I'm thinking they mixed in Alsterier, the original breed of Styrian chicken. It would explain the red leakage in the Silver Wheatens and the pink-ish eggs. I'm still amused at them calling the Silver Wheatens "Gold Duckwing" on their website.

I've heard baaaaaaaaaaad things about their recent cemanis and svarts regarding leakage. I'm almost glad I didn't jump the gun on ordering fibro from them. they're so many other interesting, rare fibro breeds of quality that aren't going to kill my wallet.

I don't blame ya. I did a major sell-off of extras this weekend. Sold all three extra boys, and 5 legbars who were acting like bats out of hell. We scaled back to ONE pair, we'll try again with them when the breeding coops are up.

I didn't have to sell a *SINGLE* NN, even if they all have bowties, the ratio of male to female was perfect. Both black chicks AND both buff/red chicks were pullets, leaving the barred chick as the only cockerel of the bunch. :)

Yeah, they do that. My three pullets are terrors. I have renamed them The Three Witches (from Macbeth). The name(s) fit!

Gun and bow hunters here have been respectful here around our home/ranch. All our cattle are here on the 250 acres and there are two houses and several barns and out buildings.
But even with posted signs on our 160 in another section, we have had poachers. That piece of land has no buildings and in winter we don't run cattle on it. We check it frequently and have neighbors who alert us of trespassers.
At least with signs, they trespass, but we have recourse.

As for broodies, I'm removing eggs twice a day from three girls right now. Have had hens try over the past two months to amass a clutch and defend their nest...not gonna happen until the end of February!

So at 6:30 this morning I hear my husband yelling out front of our house. I rushed out to help him, fully armed of course, not knowing what I would find. A bow hunter had decided to shoot a deer that was on our property from his vehicle up on the road. Naturally the deer ran before dying VERY close to our house, so the hunter decided he would just trespass on our land to get the deer...apparently never thinking that he should at least ask for permission. NOT a good idea.

After a brief exchange my husband allowed him to come onto the property to retrieve the deer since it was now dead, we didn't want the meat to go to waste (he had to go to work and there's no way I'd clean that thing on my own), and we didn't want it to rot on our land and draw predators. The deer died just below where I keep all of the chickens, and this idiot wanted to gut the deer right there. Right, because bloody entrails would never draw predators that may then decide that a chicken dinner sounds good too. Not gonna happen!

We made him drag that carcass mostly up hill across all five acres of our land. It took him nearly an hour to get it back to his truck. Then my husband made a call to AZ Game & Fish. The first person he spoke to suggested the guy had a right to be there if we didn't have a sign saying the land wasn't a hunting area. Um...the three houses on the property should be evidence enough of that, and there are laws prohibiting him from shooting from the road and shooting anything within a quarter mild of an occupied building. After talking to someone smarter an investigation has been launched.

As if it's not hard enough fighting off predators around here. Now we've got idiotic bipeds trying to draw them in closer.

Your laws are very confusing. I would put up the signs and enforce your property boundary.

Arizona Game and Fish Department Hunt Guidelines for Fall 2016 through Spring 2018
Archery deer seasons may begin on Friday of week 34 (August 19, 2016 and August 25, 2017) and run for 21 days Friday of week 50 (December 9, 2016 and December 15, 2017) and run through end of December or January 31 of the following year January 1 and run through 2 weekends (January 15, 2017 and January 14, 2018) or through January 31 .
It says January 15, 2017 so I would think they were bow hunting out of season. But it seems wishy-washy with the "or through January 31!"

It's very wishy-washy here. The AZ Game & Fish woman who finally helped us literally admitted that it "depends upon which judge you get" as to whether hunters will be held accountable for their actions. She herself has over 200 acres about an hour away from our house and has had the same problems we've had. It looks like we'll be posting a couple signs just to keep ourselves covered, but it's on record that this particular individual was verbally warned so if he shows up again we do have recourse. I still say a little common sense and courtesy on the part of the hunter would've gone a long way.

Well, I bought some Isabel Orpingtons and I also bought some Isbars for those infamous green eggs.... so far the orps are lap chicks and the isbars and legbars that are to be a part of my mixed laying flock are all super flighty... daily handling is in order

I've got to get to hell out of this country and soon. I spoke with Jeff Smith of Cackle Hatchery today and certainly meaning no disrespect, I caught myself beginning to act like DAD!!! I was able to hold it together and get off the phone without doing anything crazy but I could feel myself slipping.

@3riverschick , I was told that John's birds were used one breeding season and were culled for reasons we'll discuss in private.
