You know, I just thought of something.... Maybe people wouldn't get so up in arms about eating horse meat if it came from black and white draft horses... Might not realize it wasn't beef...
4H sure has changed a lot since the wife and I were in school, but there is still hope. There are some good kids coming up through 4H that may have the means and drive to breed good poultry. Just gotta keep them focused on it when they want to go to school for Engineering or something else that makes a good living.
If some of the people breeding for new and exciting colors would put that energy in preserving and improving recognized varieties, some of these fowl might not be in as much trouble as they're in.
4H is great and now includes science projects such as rockets. The modern farm even small ones need good science and engineering too.![]()
AMEN! Having a discussion on another website and having someone ask why bother saving the old breeds when they all have somewhat similar traits because the oldest ones were used to make the newer ones, and they don't all have absolutely unique traits. Had to point out that not everyone places the same value on the same things, which is why we have so many choices of products today that achieve the same end goal purpose. I guess folks now days just don't see the value of history, all history, and the work that went into making that history. I would like to see all of the old poultry saved for the future. I can see that each breed, even if they could provide the same utility properties as another breed, could still fill a niche for someone. Because we all have different expectations, different desires, different situations. It always seems like it is the younger crowd that is the ones that want to get rid of the old and bring in the new because they are having trouble *finding themselves* and how they fit into the world as an adult and they think that getting rid of everything old will somehow make them feel better.4H sure has changed a lot since the wife and I were in school, but there is still hope.
