BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

Forgive the blurred pic, we butchered a couple older hens and a 20 week old turken rooster today the pic is of the rooster and one of the hens after they were dressed, with the hen on the right. I don't have a good scale so no weights. The hens were 3 year old rir that had quit laying and when we opened them up I understood why, they were quite fat. Not as bad as some I have seen in the past, but enough that I removed a 1/2 inch or so of fat from around their vent area. The rooster was a hatchery stock that showed a good frame, just a little much for the ladies and I needed to reduce roosters so he had to go. I have been hatching out eggs from my mixed flock for several months now with one eye on egg production and the other looking at getting a decent sized rooster so that eating the extera isn't a chore. Lol

I will be adjusting the ration especially for our meat roos going forward.
Keep any corn out of their diet during laying season . corn , that'll put the fat on the real quick Karen
Thank you for that. I have started to move away from as much corn in their diets recently, the lay mash that I get from the local co-op (where I work) is heavy on the corn, but it's a decent ration at a good price. I do ferment their feed and I feel that it helps but I will be making a change soon.... actually have been changing slowly over to a diet with more wheat. It will cost me more but I believe it will be better as it will have less soybean meal also. Still planning on fermenting it just changing what I add.

Well all the cockerels are going to chicken heaven today. I cannot sell the pullets with them so I'm going to eliminate them from the sales ad permanently . it's been a very disappointing year here. oh well, onward and upward.

I had planed to butcher some cockerels last week that didn't make the breeding cut. Then daughter #2 decided she wanted to come out 2 weeks early. So after a few day's stay in the hospital, and a bunch of lost sleep, everyone's home safe and sound. So I'm hoping to butcher this week, though I'm pretty behind on other work.

I called every chicken owner I know to see if they wanted to pick up some of the cockerels for their own purposes. Nobody wants them.
