BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

OMG, to compain about free eggs ?

I really do think people are speaking/behaving out of a lack of knowledge. If they only knew the life of a factory hen . . .

THe $6 is to help cover the outlandish charge that goes to the committee that organizes the farmers market. THe fee was over $200 ( cant remember the exact cost now) for a season of about 3-4 months. I thought ALL the goods were too expensive and did buy a thing.
Yep. It drives me crazy that folks want cheap, but then they also are demanding "humane" care and have no clue what that means and how much it really costs to provide a good life for a food animal.

Some of those farmer's market fees are just outrageous. It's one thing if the market offers things like a lot of advertising, or booths that are set up and just need the produce put on the tables. The one here in our county charges something like $125 for the summer. It's in the parking lot of a municipal building, so there is no shade, everyone has to bring all their own tables, chairs, canopies, etc. So it isn't like they are spending money on upkeep of a market area. I can't figure out what they spend the vendor registration fees on. Some folks here just set up sides of the road to sell things. I've toyed with the notion of setting up an honor-system stand out at our front gate by the road. A friend of mine does sell eggs, I don't think she breaks even though, she sells them more to get money she wouldn't have otherwise because she keeps chickens anyway. And she has people that buy her eating eggs to hatch.

On January 1st, a new law goes into effect here in California concerning the ethical treatment of chickens. Egg prices are supposed to go up because of it.

We shall see.

I saw an article on that, said they also are anticipating egg shortages because out of suppliers, especially out of state egg farms, may choose not to change their setup to comply with the CA law. Could really mess with the egg prices all over the country. They mentioned one large supplier from Iowa that ships a lot of eggs to CA and that they could end up flooding the market elsewhere with eggs that can't be shipped to CA anymore. Should be interesting to see what happens.

It does amaze me that one State can cause so much trouble. The flame retardant chemical rules did something similar. Furniture manufacturers applied the same rules to furniture sold in the whole country. Now they have found out that the chemicals cause cancer which in the end will kill more people than would have died from fires. The rules have now been changed so there is now a lower amount of chemicals used in furniture.

I think of stuff like that every time I get a tag on something that says "The state of California has determined that this product may cause cancer". Seems like there isn't a good answer many times. I think that is why I just prefer to have everything labeled, so that I can choose which benefits outweigh the risks for myself.

This new law for eggs in Calif. could really hurt Alabama. We don't have many businesses here and we do have a lot of chicken farms. Already we have to under price the local grocery stores due to the fact we live in a high poverty area and the people around here will not pay much for the eggs. So we only get 1.50 a dozen for our eggs. If this hits us as hard as I think it might we may have to go down to .50 cents a dozen.

I did not vote for it. It seemed a bit mis guided to me.

The thing about so many of these laws is that it isn't what voters really think they are. Cage free doesn't mean chickens roaming around the green fields of a farm in an idyllic setting, pecking happily for bugs and worms while standing in the shade of larger livestock.

If people truly want animals to live happy lives even when they are destined to be food producers, then they are going to have to be willing to pay more for it. I have an acquaintance that treats her chickens as pets, but she is unwilling to eat her own chickens, even if they are butchered by someone else, and insists that she just get her usual cheap chicken from the grocery store. And that is like most people I come across whether they are chicken keepers or not. People want cheap and if cheap doesn't mean farm raised chickens like it was 100+ years ago, then they just would prefer not to know what goes on in factory farming.

I realize that Ron it is just that most states usually follow suit on California's laws.
It does seem to happen that way, or it did when I was a kid. These days though, here in TX we are tending to tell places like CA and CO where they can put some of their laws. Texans kinda don't like to be told what to do. We still are a whole other country. :)
