BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

Quote: There was another thing going around on FB stating that some are trying to get a law passed to keep chickens underground and never see daylight. Or buy chickens from China?? People just don't think things through! I don't want to eat my own birds but I did have a couple turkey processed for me to eat for Thanksgiving. And that was good. We had to have it professionally smoked as it was over 40 lbs and would not fit in a pan or my oven. So I would eat mine as long as I don't have to do the deed.

There is that new law that they are now going to be sending US raised chickens to China to be slaughtered and processed, then sent back to the US for sale. A lot of folks don't know that this is going to be happening. I still can't figure out how in the heck it is going to be cheaper to ship live chickens to China for processing, then ship them back here to the US to sell the meat. Unless a lot of corners are going to be cut.

Can't blame you about not wanting to slaughter your own poultry. I have worked my way up from not being able to touch my dead chickens, to being able to do the after-slaughter processing of them and plan to work my way up to the actual slaughtering of them myself. Right now my hubby does the deed for me. As much as I hate it, I feel like I either need to be able to eat my own birds, or stop eating meat, because I am just not happy with what I am seeing in today's factory farming and slaughter methods. And to eat chicken that was shipped to China and back again????? insert eye roll

On January 1st, a new law goes into effect here in California concerning the ethical treatment of chickens. Egg prices are supposed to go up because of it.

We shall see.

The price has already gone up tremendously. Pushing $3.75 in the local Nob Hill where only a month ago they were more than $1.00 less. I am sure it is because of the new law. Even eggs imported to California have to meet the new standards. Kern

I guess the artical I read skipped the part about sending our chicken to China. That is just crazy! I know here in AL the chicken farms here will not send any of their chicken to china. They have their own processing plants built. I dont think our Governer that is fighting for AL. jobs is going to let that happen here either.

We did have a BL cockerel that would sneek up behind me and jump on the back of my leg to try to show me he was the boss, well after three times of that I told DH he had to take care of him or I would let Biscuit have him. Biscuit is our Pitt Bull that loves to eat chicken. So DH took care of the deed but I helped pluck and process him. But we could not make ourselves eat him. I don't know why.

How is Calif. going to determine what is and is not acceptable? Is someone going to visit each chicken farm and look it over?

As I understand it (and I could be wrong), they're working very closely with the Humane Society to not only set standards, but to perform inspections of the facilities. The Humane Society was a powerful force behind this legislation and has openly stated that their ultimate goal is to convince everyone that eating animal products is cruel and inhumane, and that people should become vegetarians.

What I love is that the folks pushing for everyone to become vegetarian/vegan conveniently forget that animals are killed frequently in the production of the plants that they eat. Animals are killed by large farming equipment, they're killed by the loss of habitat when land is cleared for farming, animals are killed by farmers to prevent them from destroying plant crops. If the life of an animal was so darn important to them, they'd either figure out a way to make a Star Trek food replicator real, or they would kill themselves so as not to require food of any kind and their bodies could then go back into the earth to fertilize it.

You'd think it would be the opposite. Maybe you got too attached because you had so spend more time with him trying not to get attacked by him. The two snarky roosters we've had tasted delicious and it was easier to process and eat them than any of the other chickens. The first bird of ours that we processed was an evil little cockerel, which made it easier for me to be willing to try eating our own chickens.

Quote: I don't know why we could not. But I gave him to our DIL and they loved him. lol I guess I spend to much time hand taming my birds so that I don't have to worry about being attacked by them. But if we go out to the birds with any kind of treats they will fly into our arms or shoulders to get to be first to the treats. I can pick up anyone of my birds and I have even taught them that if I point to them and motion with my finger for them to come to me they do. I can have 20 birds standing there and make eye contact with one and point at her and motion for her to come to me and she will. It may sound crazy but I have done this since they were chicks so I could tend each of them and it works for me.
