BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

More meat = more meals for the effort of butchering. Though I struggle with how long it takes a bird to be well fleshed out, over a year, compared to a heritage chicken at 16-20. Perhaps this reflects the level of neglect of the heritage types over the years just like the chickens--IDK, I"m theorizing.

My chicks are young--hatched april 2nd. All feathered in , except for a few bare backs. So no adults here if that is what you would like pics of.

Ok, no worries. I have made friendly contact with some on the Buckeye thread that have been more than happy to show me their best. Thanks just the same.

By the way, what is everyone waiting for...some video? If it's the one about capons, I'll pass. I've eaten capons and really love the way they roast but I could not do the deed, even if I could distinguish the chickens sex at such a tender age. They have to crow or lay an egg before I'm reasonably certain.

Thank you.

Quote: I would never claim that my buckeyes are the best--as you probably know by now, each breeder has a version or strain that reflects their own selection criteria. Even if based on SOP etc, each person has a view of what that is. I like having the support of Don Schider and being able to talk to a few like minded breeders. That is one of the reasons I stuck with the ALBC lines. If you find a "connection" to a particular breeder that has value, as that person is likely to support your efforts and help you learn the buckeyes from that line.

There is an old buckeye thread that was closed a year ago with good information too. ANd as Walt LEonard says, photos are very limited as a learning too. Oh, there is the BYC Chicken Univeristy that also has buckeyes and other breeds presented as pictures and a discussion. BUt again Wlat ( APA judge) cautions about pictures.

THe video was of doing the girls-- but I did think that was posted alread . . . I dont have the ability to view video feed, so must wait until a trip to the library and bring my ear buds. lol

I'm sure what the judge says about pictures is right but that doesn't keep them from being very interesting to look at. I'm not looking for a mail-order bride from Russia, just a few reasonably good Buckeye chickens.

I'm sure you may be familiar with Pope's Epigrams..paraphrasing...'A little learning is a dangerous thing, drink deep or taste not the Pierian Spring'.

I now know better than to go into details but @@@@ stock gives me reason to pause...even with my limited knowledge.

Thank you for all your help. I can use all I can get. It seems the deeper I get into my research, the more chinks I'm falling over. If I were a quitter, I would just stick with the Dark Cornish and have done with it. My partner is trying to herd me into that direction but I'll not be thrown off all that quickly.

Excuse me again...Can this judge, Walt Leonard, be contacted on this site? I'm yet to figure out how to navigate here. If you could please just point me in his general direction, I'll try to find him and see if he will answer some questions for me.
