BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

I'm sure what the judge says about pictures is right but that doesn't keep them from being very interesting to look at. I'm not looking for a mail-order bride from Russia, just a few reasonably good Buckeye chickens.

I'm sure you may be familiar with Pope's Epigrams..paraphrasing...'A little learning is a dangerous thing, drink deep or taste not the Pierian Spring'.

I now know better than to go into details but @@@@ stock gives me reason to pause...even with my limited knowledge.

Thank you for all your help. I can use all I can get. It seems the deeper I get into my research, the more chinks I'm falling over. If I were a quitter, I would just stick with the Dark Cornish and have done with it. My partner is trying to herd me into that direction but I'll not be thrown off all that quickly.

Excuse me again...Can this judge, Walt Leonard, be contacted on this site? I'm yet to figure out how to navigate here. If you could please just point me in his general direction, I'll try to find him and see if he will answer some questions for me.

After looking for "a few reasonably good" Dorkings, I think it would be easier to find the mail-order bride!! Roflmao!

I has to google Dorkings. Nice looking chickens! I am finally in a conversation with a well known breeder of Buckeyes....oddly enough, it was one of the people who initially turned me off, completely. That's why first impressions aren't always sound. They are within reasonable driving distance from Frankfort Ky and I think we will be headed for that road trip later on this summer.

I guess good Dorkings are more rare than honest brides from Russia, huh?

This is the truth, an older friend ordered a wife from Thailand...Not sure I can say what he got but it wasn't even close! Let's just say burned!

We have a homemade plucker. We've done a little over 100 chickens in it over the last year. We would NOT have ordered more cornish cross without it. My dad started building, made it about 10%, lost the instructions, and I finished it blind. It could probably work a little bit better, but it works really well when the scalding is done right. Overall it took probably 7-10 hours of total time to build. The only thin he bought was the rubber fingers. Everything else used was spare parts that both of us had laying around. Actually, the instructions were the whizbang instructions.

The Dark Cornish, specifically hatchery Dark Cornish, are supposedly pretty neat. I've run across dozens of references/threads/blogs of people more in to prepper/homesteading scenarios that have kept flocks for multiple years. The hens are touted as hardcore broodies and decent layers, extreme foragers, etc.....again this is hatchery stock. The cocks are said to be difficult, even brutal in some instances, but you could always find one or two that were agreeable and breed from them. I ran across one man who put a hatchery DC over some blue Jersey Giant hens six years ago and has been working on his own strain since then~ impressive looking birds to say the least. The foraging, broodiness and meat qualities of DC with the temperament and frame/size of the JG. Perhaps more of a project than you're looking for but I think it sounds cool, perhaps you'll like the DC once you've eaten one!
Where are you getting them from? I hope you'll not mind giving some feedback :)

@Arielle I love the way you talk about the SS. I know the hatchery carcass annoys you but have you considered breeding them up somehow? They really do sound like delightful little birds.

Southern Momma-- THe SS . . . . breeding them up is a challenge on many fronts. Math Ace started a SQ thread on the SS and had difficulties finding birds that met the type and frame. Color of course way off sometimes but the basics were missing too. SHe finally got some great birds from a breeder, sorry I can't remember the name now, on the other thread though . . . even those birds were a disappointment. BUT far better than any other strain tried. I'm waiting for her to put some meat on those birds and then would like to buy some stock from her . . . so the wait goes on . . .

IMO drastic improvements can only come when breeding out hundreds and maybe thousands of birds . . jut like the high demand for meat required 100+ years ago. THen keep the best of the best each year and voila . . progress.

Bahahahaha. I guess the old saying "Let the buyer beware" is true. Great to be getting Buckeyes. Funny how people change isn't it.

I don't have them yet but I'm very hopeful. What's crazy about this whole thing, my partner used to show large stock when in high school and has expressed serious interest in having a go with the Buckeyes. After almost 20 years, I would have thought the urge to compete with livestock was dead but it was just laying there dormant, waiting for something to wake it up.

Hi folks. Patrick J. L. here. Dad is well on his way to his destination, leaving me alone to deal with what he calls my folly. I guess he deserves a vacation after all these years. I just hope he don't make good on his threat to stay gone all summer.

Don't look for the video on this thread because the bosses told dad that it would have to be posted on a meat chicken thread. I havent looked for it and I wont waste my time since I'm pretty busy but I do know it was sent in. I still have to send it to a private party in it's entirety as promised by dad. If the bosses won't post it on the site, the classes will be posted on youtube fairly soon. I will check back in to see if they post it or not and leave the youtube link.

Dad said he thinks he might have made a mistake by putting his political views on the bottom of his posts and I think he might be right. He and I share many views so I'm not sure if I would be any more welcome than he was by some people. I will wait for a while before I sign up at least to see if this post is deleted. Dad did take my good computer so he can watch the site, even it he keeps his word about not posting. I am just not sure if he can not chime in so far but I dont see anything yet.

Have a good one.

Jason
