BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

I am truely sorry to hear of your loss.

It is so hard going to the coop everyday and planning your next generations only to find a nearly dead or dead bird.
While I had guests in May I was not monitoring my birds every day for signs of illness like i usually do (Stand and stare at groups of birds for 5 minutes). I just happened to pick up one of my favorite hopefuls and noticed he was lighter than he should be. Then I felt the rattle in his chest. He had no other outward signs, I isolated him immediately. He died 3 hours later.

lpatelski, that's unfortunate that you lost him he looked very promising. Any chance it could have been a mycotoxin ? Any thoughts what was wrong with him? Or maybe his heart wasn't up to the heat.

I'm glad dad doesn't show any interest in seeing anything on BYC, specifically this thread. I don't care if it self-destructs but seeing it dead would further depress the old man. I don't have time to mess with it or I would try to breath new life into it. Again, it's just not worth it to me. Threads come and go and this one would have gone a long time ago if dad hadn't constantly willed life into it.

I'm on my way to Pa. this week for Muscovy duckings. That has Ariel so excited she wants to go along but she's needed at home. I'll be home for evening chores because I'll be leaving very early. These folks won't ship sucks to this part of WV...perhaps no part of the state due to postal irregularities I think. If not for Ariel, I wouldn't bother.

Gosh, some of us actually have our hands full breeding chickens for eggs and meat. Personally I'm trying to deal with an insane amount of rain that we've gotten here plus building housing for an overwhelming number of chicks I'm growing out. I actually will need some advice here in a little while because I'm going to want input on which GNH cockerel to keep...

There are natural ebbs and flows in anything, but this is a great thread with a lot of folks who care a lot about it, even when your Dad isn't here - I'm not sure it's a fair representation, or fair to think that something horrendous has happened because it gets a little slow. People get busy. Good grief.

First rain free day (so far) in a long time, off to refresh everyone's bedding - 3" rain in an hour, with sideways rain, makes it hard to keep ANY bedding dry. I think I'm going to need to treat for Cocci - I suspect some may have it (it's been impossible to keep ANYTHING dry - hey, at least I wasn't ordered to evacuate). Would be surprised if they didn't. This weather is nuts.

So sorry to hear that. I've been dealing with having many more chickens right now than is optimal for me (growing out a couple hatches from the spring). It's good I love chickens (including the "mundane" poop-related chores) because I now have 6 (going on 7) separate coop set ups right now (a lot for me). I'm at roughly 50-ish chickens - how the heck did that happen???!!! I am trying to make time to watch each group, but I worry I'll miss something like your example. (It'll be easier once I get the numbers back down).

I am giving four laying hens I don't want to keep to a friend who wants them for eggs, and I will be making some decisions and culling a bunch of boys I have growing out in the next several weeks, so it'll get easier as the numbers go back down. Building another tractor coop (for small trio/quad), and about to start on another large permanent coop. I've been beside myself because I haven't been able to work on my lumber due to all the rain - I hope to start catching up this week...

Speaking of which, I've been here at the computer too long - it's already 9am. Gotta get to work.

yes. we have bad weather here in texas for spring and it does put a huge damper on projects and everyday tasks. the rain has caused my only mortality but thankfully they learn from the dead birds mistakes and havent had one drown since.

So sorry to hear that, but glad you've only had one death.

This weather has truly been insane...

Something horrendous is happening here. If dad were to be strong enough to get on the net, seeing the thread down would bother him. Seeing him further upset would really bother me and add to our difficulty. But as I mentioned, it's not likely dad will ever use the net again.
