Just figured I'd throw this out there..... panting is cooling by evaporation, like sweating is. With them, they force air quickly over the moist inside of their mouth, it evaporates, pulling heat from the body to do so (the same reason you feel cool if you're wet in a breeze). The higher the humidity, the longer it takes for the same amount of moisture to evaporate, if it does at all.

And I assume the comb works much like ears in rabbits. Huge ears dissipate a lot of heat, so in hot climates, you see jack rabbits (with ridiculously large ears), then in the cold you see ones like snowshoe hares, which have teeny ears by comparison.

That is, figuring combs have a large number of small blood vessels very close to the surface, of course.

But, then again, if a zoo can keep penguins alive in hot climates, I don't see why we couldn't do it for cold-hardy chickens XD

Complete change of heart. I won't let a couple of folks who think they own BYC (because they post on every thread). If they don't like the mixing-up of ideas and ideals on this thread and also the fact that we do not kowtow to the APA, they can get their kicks on threads that are more in-tune with their ....I'll stop here. I hope my point is made.

Boy these chickens take forever to grow. I never noticed before but I never had any that I wanted to breed and work with. They feathered out fast but I want them big!
@JRNash my SandHill white giants all have beautiful willow legs. There is some color issue with a couple of their white feathers. A couple of them are kinda a lavender grey, the SandHill website does state that there is this problem. Theirs are a closed flock since they got them from Golda Miller a top giant breeder in the past. If yours don't get to where you want them and you can't find any breeder quality ones (I couldn't, most breeders have just black and blue) give theirs a try.
The giants are already starting to look bigger than the sussex already, I didn't expect that until they were filled out.
