BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

FYI and if anyone really cares, I've been stuck in the house for two days. Not really complaining because the heat feels good on my old arthritic bones but the SKY-HIGH humidity works to negate any good from the heat.

To keep this chicken-related, I'm having two NNs butchered for dinner for the weekend and I'll be the cook. I really wouldn't trust Ariel with these older cocks and she's having her 'beau' over for dinner on Sunday. It's clear she really likes him because she's going to church (Mass) with his family. I think she's planning to smuggle him home with her.
How are you going to cook them?

Low and slow. I'm thinking of something with mushrooms but I haven't gotten it laid out in my mind. I found some capons in a market in town but not for that kid!!! Just too expensive. I can make these old 'chew-toys' melt in our mouths. I may fix a beef dish too...these people eat beef for breakfast and that's NO JOKE!!!

That sounds very tasty!

Do they eat a lot of fish too?

I like that idea! The ventilation also gets rid of the stink.

Defnitely, ammonia is bad for chickens. I've been thinking of getting some of that ammonia detection test paper to be sure I have enough ventilation, it's needed for more than just humidity control. I'd like to know for sure that my coop is clean enough.
You can buy it for 10 bucks in the US.

Fire ant Farm, congratulations!!! That's very good news. And I hope Dumbledore is feeling better.

Thanks! He crowed his encouragement to the babies throughout the entire candling process. I'm about to give him his bath (it's actually the best way to get a really good look at how his wounds are looking).

He moved into new digs today - a larger crate in a cooler room:

If you're looking for a source of "clean" fish, here's a link to a company I've used before with outstanding results. They are a bit pricey though. (Isn't all good food?)

DesertChic thanks, but I don't think it's do -able for me. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency would have kittens if I tried importing any of these goodies! I'll look around to see if they have any across the border presence but I doubt it, it wouldn't be worth the hassle for them.

He looks pretty comfy in there, and it's good to see that his comb and wattles are a nice bright red- looks like he's definitely on the mend.

The Naked Neck tractor coop really varies in how much it needs to be tended because sometimes they'll turn the bedding, sometimes not, sometimes they hang out in there all day, sometimes not...

I was sick most of last week, all stuffed up. I walked into the Naked Neck coop (to refill feeders) on the first day I was starting to feel better and could breathe better - and I was horrified! It's an open hardware-cloth covered tractor, but the smell was not good. Got to mixing that bedding, adding sweet PDZ and fuller's earth, and then fresh pine shavings on top immediately. I wondered how long it had been like that (the whole time I was sick?!)

I'd buy an ammonia detector for their digs...

Beef for breakfast sounds like a better idea than Captain Crunch, for example...........
