BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

I keep two roos in my flock. A Standard Splash Cochin and my Wellie/Aussie cross roo. The hens stick with the roo they like most so both roos have about 10-15 hens.

A simpler way to do this might be just to keep the roosters penned until you can be present. then stake them out on rooster ties. The hens could choose who and when to visit, and you could observe matings. I think once or twice a week would be sufficient.

yep, then I just have to learn how to teach the roosters how to be tied...

got any hints or link where that is taught, so I don't break their legs?

I'm assuming I start with young ones, but how young?

staking out a rooster is new to me!

Question on incubators. Currently I have a Janoel-48 and I'm considering getting another incubator. Would it be better to get a still-air Hovabator to use exclusively for hatching while using the Janoel for incubating or just get a Brinsea 20?

You might as well get one that you can incubate in too.

You can never have enough incubators...Unless you get one really big one....

Hopefully you will get a lot of replies... with lots of differing opinions.

I tend to like a broody best; otherwise, my LG with self installed computer fan is pretty good for the price. When that is full I use my Henny Penny made from a nice plastic cooler. It is very reliable, though not user friendly. Taught me how temps are influenced by distances and angles from fa/ light bulb / sensor. Cant remember the exact cost, but something about $20. Have hatched hundreds of chicks and turkeys in it. Ducks are better off with a b roody hen. lol

A fan is helpful to moderate the temps a bit more than still air. however the fans are too drying during hatch.

Hope this helps.

I'm still pretty darn fond of my Rcom20. It's a simple, complete system and has given me outstanding results.
