Well, spring hatching has nearly come to a close. I've lost track of numbers, but somewhere close to 40 poults and the same in chicks, plus or minus. There's a few eggs in the bator, but those are, hopefully, destined for broody hens. I've had problems convincing the 3 momma turkeys to share the coop. I'm considering penning them in the coop at night so I can get the rest of the birds in. No one but the rooster dares go in the coop in the evening. I don't live there, so it's hard to do anything about it. My other coop, at my neighbor's house, had a bee swarm in the wall, that I had removed last week. Unfortunately, there was a second one. It's being removed tonight. I haven't been able to get in the inner coop. I had to pull nest boxes out and sit them in the outer coop, which broke all but one broody chicken. She moved herself back inside, with the bees. I'll be happy when they are gone and I can get things back under control.

Those are a lot of issues! What a pain that must be. I've limited myself to one giant hatch and chick purchase, all around the same age which has simplified things a bit, but now I have to start thinking about selecting which chicks to keep. Thankfully nothing has moved into my barn to complicate things! Are these africanized bees? Ugh.

Those are a lot of issues! What a pain that must be. I've limited myself to one giant hatch and chick purchase, all around the same age which has simplified things a bit, but now I have to start thinking about selecting which chicks to keep. Thankfully nothing has moved into my barn to complicate things! Are these africanized bees? Ugh.

Thankfully, these bees seem pretty mellow-for bees. I only saw one tonight, so I think he got them all this time. Now to put the coop together again. One wall was torn down (he did tack it back up), one was cut open with a chain saw and the roosts were torn down. It's so miserably hot and humid, I'm not looking forward to the re-do. Hope I get some honey next year.

Yay! I 'd wondered what happened to Pebbles, I had thought she was dinner some time ago! That's one huge chick. Is the skin white? Or is it the flash? If it's white that would be very interesting to find out where that came from.

Skin is white. Sorry for not reporting on the Pebbles(DOH 10/13/15) project hatch sooner. Her first eggs where laid 4/16/16 at 6 months of age. The Auggie egg was laid 4/26/16. Bob is Dad. The Bob crew is moving to the gazebo pen this weekend. This should create havoc with egg gathering. Maybe now is a good time to take a break. 85% to 90% humidity and 100+ degrees F. Its hot, I wear heavy tactical Propper pants and 100% poly shirts. Pouring sweat and leg cramps from dehydration while sleeping. It's time to slow down a little.

I'm not really a fan of summer myself, I like it cold. It's been coolish here, but way too dry. And the deerflies! Ugh. The planet's gone berzerk.
I've had heat lamps on my chicks, up until this week- finally all are pretty well fully feathered at 6 weeks. Huge difference between the barred hollands and buff rocks, they feathered in within 3-4 weeks- the buckeyes and cornish and crosses lag behind by 3 weeks!
At least I'm not waiting until the naked necks feather in to turn off the heat lamps.

JUST KIDDING! I don't have any naked necks.

Butchered 6 large fowl..Wyandotte and Cochin Wyandotte roosters...largest was 7.5 pounds and smallest was 4.5 pounds. Canned them and made 6 quarts of meat and 6 quarts of broth as well as putting 12 meaty legs in the freezer.
