"Breeding mutts worsens the poultry hobby for everyone"???

Next up : ACC....American Chicken Club... Register before you breed, register babies, get papers....ok someone is probably already working on this!

I don't have a problem with the "who's your daddy" aspect - I have more of a problem with "who's your momma"!!

I have two roosters, but one (of unknown breed) is confined with 7 gals who aren't consistent layers down at our Green Mile coop and the other rooster (Iowa Blue) free-ranges it with about 30 other gals on the rest of the property. So far, the only hatchings we've had have been from the GM coop since I gather all the eggs from the main coop. I've only figured out who the momma is for one of the seven GM successes tho' - it's got feathery feet and we've only got one gal, in our whole entire flock, with feathery feet!

X2. Well said and needed to be said. The OP seems to think that anything s/he says is okay though, but orders others to not say anything at all if it isn't "nice". 'Nice' is a relative term and I'd be in someones face if they *told* me when I should/could say something or not.

It isn't rude to give your opinion. It is rude to do it in a way that disdains anyone who doesn't agree and call them stupid.

Personally, I know every sire and dame to every chick on the place.

Some of y'all are really funny. And hypocritical as can be. Everybody's opinion is good, if you agree with me. Right? And those of you that are concerned with hurting someones feelings. The main problem we face today as a nation is fear to tell the truth and worring about a law suit. You folks like that, get a life and enjoy your chickens.

I like your opinions even if it does make me cry and hurt my feelings. Keep um coming.

I've seen a lot of children cuddling mixed up puppies with big old smile on their faces, and I don't think that hurt the dog industry any!

I am a live and let live kinda person. I don't have a problem with someone sharing their opinions with me, even if they differ widely from my own. I do have a problem with someone telling me what I can or cannot do in my own home or with my own animals.

There's a big difference between someone telling me "I don't like the idea of mixed breed chickens" (an opinion) and someone telling me "You shouldn't breed anything but purebred chickens" (dictating). I have no issue with the former and a big issue with the latter.

I can't see how raising mutt chickens is hurting the hobby. After all, if you breed a lot of mongrels and nobody wants them, they get killed and put into the freezer, which makes them useful. It's not like breeding mongrel dogs where when nobody wants them, they get turned loose to kill livestock, or they go to the pound to be put to sleep and their bodies tossed into the dump, all at rather large cost to the general tax paying public.

We have absolutely no idea what that person said. All we've got is the OP's interpretation of what that person said, and since the OP appears to enjoy drama and a bit of righteous indignation, I suspect that what was said has been slightly colored. It certainly wasn't a direct quote. It's hard to judge what was said without having any idea of what was actually said.

I wouldn't mind having more people get interested in preserving the separate pure breeds of chicken, but if someone wants mutts, it isn't hurting me in the least. Not to mention that anyone who doesn't see the point of maintaining pure breeds isn't going to be a good steward for the breed, anyway.

The fancy or show people want everyone who raises chickens to raise SOP breeds, as greater numbers improve the fancy.

"Guy: Then keep them all and quit trying to find homes for them later on."

Isn't that the key? Don't you think he sounds more upset about folks trying to push their cross-breeds off on people who could be raising pure-breeds?

Go ahead and breed crosses (I've done it), but do not expect everyone else to be in love with your results.

Your cockerels will probably end up in the stew pot, as their crossed genetics are unlikely to help anyone improve SOP or even egg/meat qualities. Don't expect to find loving caring homes for every cross-bred rooster you hatch. Someone might want them to pretty their yard, but it is truly unlikely.

Your pullets may be great layers, or may not produce enough eggs to pay for the feed. And they will probably not be SOP, so they will have little of that kind of value. Enjoy what you created at home. Don't farm out such pullets to others who are expecting something else. They are basically pets and should be sold as such. If they are not friendly/pretty enough to be distributed as pets, the stew pot waits.

If you are having fun, go right ahead and breed crosses. Only hatch what you can handle yourself, as no one else will likely want them.

You need not care for anyone's good opinion, if you are doing nothing illegal or immoral. Enjoy Life!
