"Breeding mutts worsens the poultry hobby for everyone"???

I also think that HE was very rude and snobbish......I think that people have the right to have whatever makes them happy......If you want crosses....you should have crosses...if you want pure ...you should have pure......I have pure but I have seen crosses that looked alot prettier than my pure bred bantams......I think everyone should be free to choose without other people getting into their business.....and being rude....his pures came from someones crosses....LOL

Excuse me , how do you think we have all the breeds we have today?! Crossbreeding !!! People do it to get the desired traits such as body size ,egg production or meat production. That is how breed lines are established, sheesh!

I doubt this will come as any surprise to anyone. I've often seen this statement on the internet, and it's just as simplistic and wrong now as ever.

Just because I find someone that wants to pay $1500 for my dog still doesn't make it worth that. If I can get a $100 dog, and breed it to a dog that I paid $125 for, and if that is the actual value of said dogs, i.e. the most common price, the puppies are not going to be "worth" $1500 no matter what anyone says, in the context of this discussion.

But to get back on track, yes, I think the issue of selling mutts as purebreds is the issue. Not simply owning them. The fella that the OP had the discussion with was confused on that.

I think you lack an understanding of basic economic principles. Certain commodities, gold & oil for example, trade on a world market & have universally accepted values. The value of everything else is established by agreement between buyer & seller. If someone pays you $1500 for your dog then by definition the dog is worth $1500 to that buyer. It may not be worth that much to the next buyer but that's irrelevant as dogs aren't subject to universal valuation.

As to the issue of breeding mutts my only concern is the fact that many of our standard breeds are facing extinction. I would prefer that people chose to work toward preserving some of these breeds rather than producing mutts.
However, the Libertarian in me believes people should be free to da as they please as long as they don't harm others.

THe standard breeds do need ongoing support to bring the numbers up to a sustainable level. But like most domestic species, the crosses are the most numerous.

Fortunately I love breeding and now that I have chickens, I'mtrying VEry hard to limit myself to 3 breeds of chickens. My real breeding project is the BUckeye. I'm trying to get very good stock so hence I have none at this time and will need to wait until spring for chicks. THe FBCM I initally selected for the choc eggs then , darn it, they became APA approved so now I feel compelled to breed them and will try to do so responsibly. My EE are just for fun, to have colored eggs without the stress of feather color or meeting an SOP. Just a productive flock of hens for pink, green and blue eggs.

Breeding a specific breed to the SOP and doing it well is a long road of learning and dedication. Maybe more people can consider buying from good breeders when they are looking to add to or replace stock as this supports the breeding of good stock.

IMHO

PS. I do have several other breeds just as layers; variety is the spice of life. Like BO, SSH, SLW and other LF. ANd black sex links and production reds. Cross breds and purebreds, all with a purpose.

This happens in eveyone of my hobbies, people bash mixes, and the people that sell mixes.

For example, I grow super-hot peppers and the Ghost Chile was the hottest. Then the Infinity-Chile beat it, but no one recognizes it because the Infinity-chile is a mix of two stable strains(hybrid). And people on EBAY were selling a mixed strain and calling it a Ghost-Chile. Now vendors and hot-sauce companies are putting this hybrid into production, and it isn't true.

Same for my tomato hobby, the hierloom tomato growers always bash the mixed breeds(hybrids) and GMOs. They bash the hybrids in gocercy stores that last long on the shelf, that taste like mush and have a mealy texture.

I have nothing bad to say about mutt chickens, as long as you don't falsely advertise them as pure breeds when you sell them.

He looks very much like my Cash, I re-homed with a neighbor. He was destined for their dinner table, but their adult handicapped son took a liking to him and decided to keep him; which is fine by me.

Truth is, I don't have the time or energy to put into serious breeding. I do have my brahmas and will always have brahmas, but they are just my favorite laying hens.
