Breeding RIR question

I kinda am just thinking cool colors... I am in NC so it does get cold but not real bad. Next I got to find a nice one... without hatching a dozen... I bet the Wyandotte would make some neet patterns and colors with the RIR girls and the eggs should still be brown. If I can find a young one or a few eggs I would take it.

No no sex link hybrid but Cackle hatchery advertises this cross as their Indian River breed, strain, whatever. Anyway Indian Rivers are what the Delaware breed was initially called before being named Delawares.

Delaware roo x RIR pullet= A Delaware looking bird with a lot of (brassiness)red/rust color bleeding in the back and neck feathers.

My vote for you to try is a Barred Rock roo over the RIRs you will get a barred patterned bird similar to a BR the roos are barred with straw colored hackles and saddle feathers, (see M to the Maxx's avatar) and the pullets are more cuckoo patterened with more whitenning in the neck area, (see Kooshies BYC page and look at her Gourmet Blacks-Snowneck) as this is what the female cross looks like.

This also is not a sex-link chick but a very good layer of large brown eggs. Also this cross gives them the same hybrid vigor as the sex-links just not sexable by color at hatch. I think you will be surprised at the results of this cross.
Just sayin', catdaddy

Thanks Cat.. I might be able to find a Barred rock a little easier. I dont want to have to buy a bunch of birds and I dont know of anyone local but you never know. What do you think a Barred and Rir would do.. I bigger bird? I think this is what I want to try. Good thought.

My dad uses a blr rooster with his RIR hens very nice!! Also used a blue rooster with his RIR also kinda cool. Wyandotte rooster. or try a silver laced. Basically any wyandotte you can get. you'll get a larger bird!! Mike Have fun

Hatchery BRs and hatchery RIRs are about the same size, in my experience. My breeder type dark RIR girls are AMAZONS! They are very, very large, mild-mannered and fabulous layers. My BRs, a mix of hatchery and a couple generations removed from hatchery stock, match them egg for egg, usually. They will all be barred, but with lots of leakage of the red, usually. Not sexlinked if the BR is the rooster, but a good cross of two great breeds.

Cynthia, Your pretty close you have any full blooded BR eggs... Maybe 6.... 4 hatch 1 or 2 possable roosters. Heck you might be close enough for me to take a quick trip if you had one. I just dont want a lot of birds to take care of. I had a heck of a time with 19 RIR chicks... heheh there cute when there tiny but then a lot of work... I feel like I am on vacation with only the 6 now.... Joey

Joey, I will be hatching a batch of eggs, probably next month. In that batch, there will be some BR eggs. I'm positive that there will be a cockerel for you, if you want to come pick him up, maybe even a couple or three pullets I could let go of. I may only keep one or two BR pullets from the entire batch and they're sexable at hatch with pretty fair accuracy, so no long waiting period to see if I have any boys.

Might be a plan.... Plus if you want a RIR rooster I can give you one... Not sure if there hatchery or what but there very nice from a guy I believe Tim in kentucky then came with a Npip... I am in NC kinda near Gastonia just north of it. Thanks
