Breeding Suggestions for an Amateur....

I see what you're saying, but one reason alone stands out to me as to why I should consider making a new breed: because I cannot afford to lay down $200 per chicken for an existing breed.

I dont blame ya, at this point in my life i wouldnt either. What my point was is that if u took his advice, joined, asked a lot of.questions, hung around and let your enthusiasm for the breed flow to the point it annoyed the older guys, let them see you are serious, they might be a little more inclined to jelp out what they have seen become an club member and true enthusiast. Its all up tp you. Is it worth some time an d effort? Cause it was to the guys that have.the.rare.fowl.
 
Also, think about the cost to create a new breed. By the time you have crossed birds, raised chicks to adulthood for selection, crossed them and raised more. And repeating this for a number of years to set the traits, you will have spent far more than acquiring a more expensive pair from the outset.

Yeah, I guess I see what you mean. After all, $15 per year is a small price to pay for the chance of getting stock worth a lot more than $15.

One thing u will need plenty of is patience. Im still learning that one.

I know of young folks that were provided birds that otherwise would have sold well over 200 each for what $$ they had thier pockets. It is more about the individual interested, how enthusiastic they are, how open minded and willingness to listen to selection techniques and breeding techniques so that the originating breeder knows the line will be continued. being impatient will cost you dearly and almost always a great deal of $$ in the process.

I can certainly assure you that any cross or development you would plan for a "new" breed has been tried before far too many start these projects and then abandon the project when they realize they have to hatch and raise 5-800 a year to select a mere 5% and hope they carry the traits as adults that were desired. Often waiting 18-24 months to select the right breeder birds then cull after that point due to breeding abilities..
