Breeds

I bought a flock that I found on craigslist& got 7 hens & a rooster for $60.00 they are 2 years old, and he said they were all still good layers. They are mixed 4 that I think are Black Sex Links 3 That are either R.I. Reds or Isa Browns (need help with this one, and the rooster is a Rhode Island Red named Roscoe the Red. I put pics on somewhere might be in the coops section, but will post again here. Thanks to all for your input and help this is a great forum.

It's really tough to see some of these through the chicken wire. You definitely have some Black Sex Links (unsure how many because I'm not sure if some of these pics are the same birds or different birds, but likely four since that is the number you thought you had). I also see some Rhode Island Red or Production Red hens and a RIR rooster (again I'm uncertain as to the number because I can't tell in these pics if some of them are the same hens or different hens, but likely 3 RIR or Production Red hens). You have no Isa Browns as none of your reddish hens have white underfluff.

Thanks for the input & you're right 2 of the hens are R.I.R comparing the coloration , etc to the rooster. That makes me happy cause I wanted R.I.R to begin with, although the Black sex links are beautiful birds also.

You're welcome. I love Black Sex Link hens. They are egg laying machines. :o)

Ok, I may have been wrong again. I got a book on breeds and the pictures in the book on comparison look more like New Hampshire Reds. The coloration of the R.I.R seems to be a darker shade of red-brown, Whatever they are still beautiful birds.

I agree with what I could see through the chicken wire, their coloration looked a little light to be RIRs and that's why I said, "or Production Red." Based on your confirmation of the lighter color, I feel certain that they are Production Reds.

You're probably right again, the New Hampshire hens have black feathers on their back end.

True, and also good quality New Hampshires tend to have an orange element to their feathers which I don't see in your birds. Actually, Production Reds tend to outlay either parent breed (RIR or NHR) that was originally used in their breeding. They likely won't quite match the lay rate of your Black Sex Links, but they should be excellent layers. Good luck in getting lots of eggs.
