Chickens aren't stupid just single minded. Their goal is to get to a certain place not, find an opening.

I herd mine slowly into the gate with a big rake and after only a few days they learned where it was. Now all I have to do is pick up the rake and say 'Go on get inside'. and the slowly go in.
