Bring your "Howdy's" here!

LOL! Well, the boyfriend won't be back over until tomorrow or Wednesday. I actually don't have to crack the whip, though! He's having a blast building this thing, and he's wicked excited to have chickens.

Hey, maybe you guys can help me out. The coop is 4x4. The run will either be 4x10 or 4x12. If it's 4x10 should I not exceed 4 standard hens? If it's 4x12 is that adequate for 5 standards? If I get standards and bantams (still only 4 or 5) does that make both of those dimentions more than sufficient?

Don't really know size versus chicken...all I know is that I have a 7'x8' run and 6 chickens and a duck, and they are happy! I do let em out into the yard some everyday though. I know they are happier than the chickens in a factory farm, thats for sure! I saw a show on that about 6 or 8 months ago and I think that was what made me get my own in the first place...They have the chickens in a "pen" that they cant move in their entire life!! And a chicken can live for like 20 years!! So just think about that when building yours...thats what I did.

Oh man i just had a close call!

So everyday we let the chicks in the big chicken run while the big girls are in our yard....well the tough part is always getting the chicks from 1 place to another so today i figured i could just shoo em in the run door

.....awful idea!!! They ran out to the big girls, and the big ones sorta puffed up at em so here i am running all around trying my best to get them all away and i manged to catch 3 in my hands at once somehow! (im magic i know

) so then the other 2 (the 2 most unfriendly of course

) are on the loose running at the biggies and all over and eventually i got em all safe and sound in the run....MAN that was a close one!

Oh no... a week off can cause a break down when you go back!! Sometimes a vacation is hard to get over. But you were moving the whole week off, so that makes it worse! I hate moving with a passion. I am an Army brat and we moved every three years or so. I have had my fill!!

On top of coming back to work, Ken took the wrong medicine this morning and we had to call 911 because we didn't know what went wrong. I was 30 minutes late for work, had to leave immediately for a board meeting, then the sandwich lady got nasty with me at the gas station. I called her a bad name. I had too much!

Your coop is going to dictate the number of birds you can have. Ideally you should figure 4 sq ft per bird. So for your coop that would be 4. However, I have used 2 sq ft in coops without any trouble as long as they have access to the outside. I would count 2 bantam as one standard.

Oh I bet that was scary! The sandwhich lady probably deserved it! I know about the crap days it seems like everything goes wrong!
