I have to agree. There are always other ways to supplement humidity with dishes of water and sponges and such if the pump isn't getting the job done. Just a shame with an $800 unit.

I totally agree. Quick question tho, if I wanted, could I buy more hatching trays for the 190 and replace the egg holding trays with hatching trays and hatch on all three turner levels? Or is that impossible? I've also thought this with the 1502.

The egg holding trays have removable dividers. Take the dividers out and it's the same as a hatching tray. If you had more of those little corner pieces you can just hook them together and hatch on the upper levels. I wouldn't do it without a top on the tray though. You wouldn't want a chick to fall to the bottom and get hurt.

I believe air circulation is most critical at lockdown and hatching. The embryo has a greater O2 requirement. Think of how much more tissue needs to be oxygenated through that shell. More chick and the surface area stays the same.

I also live at 6000 ft, so lower partial pressure of O2 and I live in the high desert, thus lower humidity in the air being circulated into the incubator.

I recieved another email today from the company today suggesting I check for gaps at the vents or a loss of seal from shipping.

That makes sense. I don't really know how altitude effects hatching.......I must have missed that part in the previous posts. sorry!

hi k2 chicken

Yes, you can. I actually ordered 2 more of the hatching trays that come with the top cover, so that I can convert the incubating turners into shelves during lockdown. The most important thing is to make sure you have something safe to cover the hatching trays and prevent the chicks from wandering to the edges and falling off the sides. There is a gap on all the sides and I reckon a chick could fall through if it wanted to.

I guess if you can build the safety covers you can do it yourself, but I figured, I'll just spend the money and not have to worry about it.

I'm going to hatch on 3 levels, the lowest 3, and the top shelf, I'm adding one more evaporating water tray. I'm just going to use something I can find, like a food tray or shallow dish. I'm hoping this will resolve my humidity requirement at lockdown.

Will take pics when I am in Lockdown mode.

I would definately like to see how you seet this up. When are you going into lockdown? I think I'm adding more eggs so will probably hatch in my genesis.

My lockdown will be from Feb 15-18. So its next week Tues-Sat thereabouts. Will put up pics on Tues or Wed.

All my eggs in there are large fowl, and I have set in about 80+ eggs, and I'm going to candle them again on Feb 14th. I'm really quite excited about this, because when I last candled on day 10, most of the eggs were showing development, that's just wonderful.

We just spent today, and will be spending tomorrow and Friday as well, working on expanding the grow out pen, plus building a 8 x 4 coop for the babies that are in the brooder now, ready to go out. Making space for the chicks which are about to hatch. YAY.

Well that's good to hear, thank you. Now only if we can get this lockdown humidity thing down then we would be golden. I would love to hear from a person with the new'er 1502 sportsman and how they are doing on lockdown.

I was actually getting ready to order a 190 the day I saw this thread...now I'm not so sure. I need a larger incubator, but I'm starting to think the 190 is not it. For the cost of this unit...none of the problems mentioned should ever be a worry! I guess if you already have it...you just do what ya gotta do, but I don't think I'll be spending $900 for an incubator that I have to modify in any way.

For that price, it should hatch, diaper, & rock the babies to sleep without any help from me!!

I'm 99.9% sold on a Dickey at this point.
