Brinsea Ecoglow chick brooder - one BIG flaw!

I love my ecoglow! I was so happy not to have to worry about temps etc. I used a clear sided brooder for the first couple weeks and was able to peek at my chicks :) When they moved to a bigger brooder ( also clear sides) they basically only went under in the evening. Cleaning the poop off the top wasnt my favorite thing to do, but it was worth it not to have to think about bulbs, fire hazzards and monitoring temps.

Enjoy your chicks!

I'm using the EcoGlow 20 to brood my ducklings. I like it. They do hop on top and make a mess, but it's worth it to me to not have to worry about a heat lamp catching fire.

One caveat--I am brooding in my bathroom where I can keep the temp up. I don't know if it would be warm enough outside. I have 8 ducklings under the EcoGlow 20 and it works fine. I think if I were brooding them outside, I would get the 50 so they could stay well away from the edge.

I have already caught a couple ducklings eyeing the top of the brooder like they were thinking about jumping out from the top of the EcoGlow. Just something to be aware of.

my baby chicks love it.the ones that are picked on will hide under it.i call it mama hen.

i have mine inside of a brooder box i dont worry at all.i was concern that it would not be warm enough.its warm to the touch.my chicks lay on top of it and sleep.when they were a couple of days old they all crowed under it now they are on top of it.so cute.

Just used my for the first time today. I picked up 2 EE's. I was worried at first that it was not warm enough when I touched it, but the thermoter reads 95-100. May need to raise it up a little for them. That is where the chickies are hiding out.

Started using my Brinsea Ecoglow20 last night. Wasn't going to be using it until April. But my friend picked up 3 chicks for me. Cute to watch them! If they get startled, they run under the Ecoglow and then peek out the edges. I noticed last night that they tended to sleep along the edges. Two of the chicks are already jumping up on the top and they are only 3 days old!!!

I realize that this is an old thread, but I wanted to say how much I like the Brinsea brooder. After seeing the positively insane electric bill we had after running two heat lamps for about a month with different batches of chicks, I ordered two of the smaller brooders figuring they would pay for themselves over time. They say it's good for 20 chicks. Right now I have eleven chicks under one and they love it! The first few days they used the regular heat lamp but I set up the brooder as soon as it arrived and tucked them under it one by one. Then I shut off the heat lamp. They are all using it now and come out when they are hungry or thirsty and it seems to be working very well. It isn't hot enough to burn anything, which is a huge weight off my mind. I always hesitated to go anywhere even briefly when I had heat lamps running. I've heard too many horror stories about fires and whatnot but with this, I'll sleep easy.

It seems more natural to me as well. I'm very happy I bought these and hope to get lots of use from them. I won't go back to the heat lamps, ever!

I have to agree about the flaw, however they are totally adorable peeking out from the side of the brooder!

Just a word of warning to those using this brooder: make sure there's enough space on all sides of the brooder to prevent chicks from getting stuck between it and your box once they learn to jump on top of the brooder and get playful. I learned the hard way : /
