Brinsea Ecoglow chick brooder - one BIG flaw!

I have three call ducklings using one, right now. They like it quite well. They don't need heat as much as chicks do, for some reason (I noticed that when I raised Cayuga ducklings under a heat lamp), so they spend a lot of time during the day ON TOP OF IT. But they go under it at night to sleep.

Cool, thanks for answering!

Can anyone give me a guess as to how many Silkie chicks can reasonably fit under the EcoGlow 20 Chick Brooder? I can't decide if I need 1 or 2 or to just go with the new EcoGlow 50. Anyone know the dimensions of the 50?

Not sure on silkies, but I just got 35 or so LF chicks to 5 weeks using two 20's. It's a tight squeeze now but they still squeeze under now and then. I think a 50 would have been better for that many!

Thanks, that's very helpful! I have 36 developing Silkie eggs due to hatch between Friday and Saturday, and I can't decide what would be best. I wish I knew how many were going to hatch!

I should probably just go with the 50 in case I have more at a later date and time!

Me too (and I don't even have my chicks yet!!) Where in the US can you get one?

I've been using an Eco-Glow to raise just a half dozen chicks, our first flock. I hesitated to buy one given the relatively high cost, but it's been great. True when they get bigger they fly on top of it and then want to fly out of the box altogether. And true it's hard to see them when they are huddled underneath. But one thing I love about it is that it doesn't admit light other than the tiny red light on top that lets you know it's turned on. We have our brooder box in our bedroom and when the lights are out the chicks go right to sleep.

I've read they might grow faster if they have light 24 hours a day, but I wonder if there is something to be said for a more natural sleeping pattern. At any rate, it's worked well for us--and I can't imagine these chickies growing any faster!

I have only one complaint about the Eco Glow. I wish they made it easier to raise and lower the height.

Wish I'd known about the discount! I would imagine the company would respond to any questions about what size or number you might need.

I found them on FB and got a discount code, so I went ahead and ordered one. The 20 is good for 20 chicks and the 50 is good for 50 chicks.

Now that I have ordered a Brinsea Ecoglow chick brooder (the smaller one) for my 16 chicks (coming in August)... I have questions!!!

How long does it take to arrive from time of order?

My raised brooder is about 6' x 3 1/2' (still being built) and will be kept in our basement ... should I place the Ecoglow in the center of the brooder? Do I need any additional heat lamp or does this completely replace the need for a heat lamp? What about lighting? Do I need to keep lights on for 24 hrs for the first couple of weeks? Should they have red bulbs to discourage pecking? Should I pen off part of the brooder initially?

Are pine shavings better for bedding than the compressed wood pellets for chicks? Has anyone figured out a way to keep the chicks from pooping on the top of the Ecoglow?

Sorry for all the questions!

Neurotic New Mommy!!
