Can I feed my three week old chicks broccoli leaves? I know you can feed them to full grown chickens but just wanted to make sure it was okay for young chicks. I won't give them too many just a little something to ease their boredom. Thanks in advance!

Thank you, Imp! Do I need to cut them up any certain way?

I julienne, even for the adults.

I am so new to chickens in general so ... what is grit? Dirt, sand, yard stuff? Di I even have to buy it? Are you swaying grit to help them digest foods other than feed?

Thanks,

Grit is small stones/pebbles that chickens eat. It makes it's way to the gizzard where it is stored. The gizzard is a strong muscle that, along with the grit ,grinds up the food to make it easier for chickens to digest. Not having grit can be dangerous for chickens. If they are out on the ground they will pick up the grit from the ground, if the ground is rocky. Chicks need grit when they start eating foods other than starter food. Adults have stones, maybe up to the size of pencil erasers in their gizzards. Here's a pic of chick grit I bought for the chicks I just raised.

Well, nevermind. They just looked at me like, "uh... where's the mealworms, mom?" Wouldn't touch them!
