Broiler Sire Line

I have heard that cochins have big drumsticks and the cornish have the big breast meat, I think the cross could be pretty good.

The laws of genetic inheritence is not that simple ... there are many genes involved ( DNA and mitochondrial DNA) , mitosis, miosis, which gene will be dominant, recessive, or co- dominant, etc. in every individual gene pairing.

So far all of the offspring in this pairing have been huge. Mostly the boys.

I have hatched somewhere between 20-40 of these chicks this year. Maybe I just lucked out with picking these two. They have a very high hatch rate as well. I just thought I'd mention that in my case using a cochin for a meat cross worked out really well.

Generalities are nice, however what is the basis for comparison... any claim needs to be substantiated by facts. What is meant by "huge" ? To be specific as for size comparison, can you provide weight and age at butcher as well as the resulting carcass weight? What are the actual weights of the boys as well as the girls ? How many actual chicks? What is the actual "very high hatch rate" ( # eggs set vs. actual # of chicks hatched) ? Thank you!

I will get the weights on them. This is my first year. I didn't want to raise Cornish X - so I decided to cross my two biggest birds. Result is faster growth then my purebred barred rocks of the same age, as well as faster growth then my cochins of the same age. The mother weighs more then my nephew at birth hands down, and he was 10.1 pounds. I will get exacts for you soon enough.

The girls are much smaller then the boys. They are still bigger then the pure barred rocks though. About the size of a pure cochin cockerel of the same age.

They feathered out fully by 4 weeks. They were off heat by 5 weeks. Never had an infertile egg from the two. All eggs to full term. One hatch was compromised by opening the incubator on day 19 - all shrink-wrapped. Only 2 polish survived. Not a single chick has ever died. I have 14 in the grow out pen that are 3 weeks old, 5 that are 15 weeks old and I have sold 15 at our spring sale.

Would measurements be sufficient? I don't have a scale just yet (except one that I would weigh myself on and then the bird). Not sure how well the latter would work :/
